Extremely rude and unprofessional waitress, terrible service. We went there for lunch as this seemed like a nice vegetarian place. From the start, the waitress seemed grumpy and the opposite of welcoming, she didn't say hi to us and when ordering it really felt like we were bothering her and that she did not want to be there. We didn't give it much importance as we thought that maybe she was just having a bad day. The food was good and we were thinking of coming back another day.
When I went to pay, once again, the waitress did not acknowledge me, did not reply to me or even look at me, she just started writing on a piece of paper the bill and handed it over to me. I pointed out that she had charged us something extra that was not from our table and she fixed it and I handed over the cash which was almost the exact amount, she just had to give back 3000 riels, very easy... She took my money and I saw that she started getting really confused as she was pulling out the calculator and started taking out some notes back and forth from the cash register. I assumed she didn't have the exact change and while pointing out at the cash in my hand, I asked her if she needed change. She said yes but when I asked her how much she needed, she did not reply and instead grabbed all my cash directly from my hand, and without saying anything, started serving herself from my money without telling me how much she was taking. She juggled multiple times between my cash and the cash from the register without saying anything until she handed me back some of my cash. I had no idea how much she had taken and after seeing her so confused, I wasn't really confident that she had taken the right amount. I shared my confusion with her and instead of communicating what she had done, she took back my cash from my hand once again, did another round of mixing the cash from the restaurant and mine, and handed me over another pile of notes, still without any explanation or any word. At this point I was completely lost and I told her that I was really confused about what happened with the money to try to get some sort of explanation or at least know the amount she had taken from my personal cash. Instead of answering, she just made a face. I left with the feeling that she scammed me.
This is obviously unacceptable and is a very rude and unprofessional way to treat clients. The waitress (who is not a local and speaks English) has serious communication issues and should probably not work in a cafe. I read similar comments about the waitress so this is definitely not a one-off. In the end, even though I liked the food, I never went back...
Read moreReally enjoyed my time at Simple Things when in Kampot! 🌿 So much I came a total of three times, for smoothies, dinner, and yoga! Initially I was just attracted to the name of the restaurant, haha. Everyone is quite friendly at the restaurant!
They have an interesting assortment of vegetarian dishes and pizza, and some delicious drinks as well. The smoothies I had were perfect - I really liked the refreshing "fiber attack" smoothie with banana, mango, carrot, papaya. (Good for you guys, using metal straws!) I got to try the oyster mushrooms with lentils which was unique and quite tasty. Loved the fresh spring roll appetizer - the ingredients (such as including mango) make them quite different from other spring rolls I've tried. Oh, and I really like that they give every table a free tall bottle of iced water - it's so amazing in the heat! And I appreciate that they bring out a new one once you're done with the first bottle. When I was here for dinner, it got pretty packed and lively!
Also, yoga ($5 for about 75min) with Ray (a cheerful travelling yoga instructor) was also great and very relaxing! The studio upstairs is spacious and clean. Happy I...
Read moreMy wife and I were staying in Kampot for an extended vacation, and over the course of a month we have come to Simple Things no less than 20 times for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just some refreshing drinks. This place is unbelievable. The menu is simply vast with dozens of varied choices from beautiful Italian-style homemade pizza, falafel and veggie burgers to obscure, but delicious Georgian starters. Honestly, having travelled through Asia, Europe and North America, I am not sure if I have ever seen a vegetarian menu this impressive. The owners - Andrey, Natasha and Marina - are about the friendliest, most welcoming people we have met in Kampot, and that’s saying a lot. You can tell that they really care not just about the food, but their guests’ overall comfort. This, coupled with a great space and good choice of music, makes for a great atmosphere. Simple Things is exactly the type of haven one hopes to find when traveling through a far-away land - a privately-owned little restaurant with a vision, where you will be taken care of on a very personal level and truly made to feel at home. Go there....
