We came here by chance as it was opposite our hotel, quite late in the evening. Good first impression as I heard other customers talking in Japanese, and the menu looked good.
However, our first interaction with the staff was them looking a little uncomfortable and telling us that it was quite late and the restaurant was busy so they couldn't serve us food. We weren't sure why- there were tables free- and then after some chat amongst eachother, they said we could in fact stay for food. (Also, I now know the advertised closing time on Google isn't until midnight. We arrived no later than 9pm.) Perhaps we could put this down to a miscommunication, except that other, Japanese customers arrived later than us without any protestations or awkward treatment (I was able to understand, being a Japanese speaker).
We made our order and were duly advised that some dishes would take longer than others. Ultimately, we got drinks and one cold plate but cancelled our other food order.
It's no problem to wait when the food is very good (as was the cold tofu dish I did try). However, we left feeling like we were not really welcome there, which is very unpleasant, and somewhat limited our enjoyment of any food or drink therewith.
Having read the other reviews, it sounds like this place has a great reputation, and depending on who you are you may get good service. Still, in my opinion, all customers should get the...
Read moreI have been here twice now and the I really like the super cosy and personal atmosphere! The owner/chef seems to be really nice and pays a lot of attention to detail of the food. The food is delicious and the flavor combinations are really nice but we had two gripes the last I went. Last time, our food took really long (might be because it was very busy). Also for some reason, all of our dishes came out slightly on the salty side for some reason? Especially the hamburg sauce was very sharp and salty. If they toned down on the saltyness it would have been perfect! I would recommend this place if you want to go to a japanese place with lots of small dishes and a lot of strong and bold flavors!
Edit: After going here a couple more times, it deserves a lot more appreciation ! The small dishes like the dried squid, futomaki and the fish stew were spectacular and you honestly can’t find anything that come close to what oyakata provides in other high end japanese restaurants...
Read moreIts second time we come here. The quality this time is too different compares with first time. The cold Soba noodles too salty that we left the whole dish can't finish, its even worse combine with salted meat. Its expensive so we try to finish but can't, too much salty not good for heath Chicken fried with tartar sauce, I'm sorry its not tartar, its just basic mayonnaise… I called the dish just because of tartar sauce Salmon sashimi too thin and the cutting shape looks messy like an amateur chef The only good is sushi roll, recommend it. The price overall is not fit with quality. Too expensive compared with the taste. I won’t come back cos there are much better sushi restaurant with...
