As a tourist, it’s certainly not easy to find recommendation of where to eat online for Phnom Penh. I was looking for a place that’s not overly expensive, good value and has a nice ambience. I went the old school method, ‘traveling’ by google map by scrolling around and I chanced across Topaz. $$$$ and French fine dining and I thought this was definitely out of my budget, till I saw they had a lunch menu. I wasted no time and affirmed my decision.
I dropped by on a Friday noon pretty much when they opened for lunch service. I think there was some sort of lunch event/photo shoot going on and hence there was some crowd. I quickly sat and decided on going with the all in menu. Starters would be the fennel soup, mains the steak and dessert the coffee mousse cake.
Before everything started, they served like a pre starter. I’m not sure what exactly it was, some sort of soup in a shot cup, but it was delicious. The soup was served next, they present it by pouring the soup into the bowl, really like fine dining. Tasted great but fennel is a new ingredient I haven’t tried enough of, so I wasn’t sure whether it was good or great. I was also served bread (I believe it’s free flow) and you get to choose which bread you want. My first selection was great, warm and soft yet crispy on the exterior. I believe my second option was a sourdough hence much tougher. Mains was served shortly and I was extremely pleased with the presentation. Steak was a little thin but it was medium well still and well seasoned. Some parts were abit tough to cut but the sauce made up for it. Ended off with dessert. If anything, this was the letdown for me. The dessert was too simple. Just 4 layers, and 2 of the same layers (mousse/sponge). There was nothing additional in the presentation and seeing some of the other photos, I felt much more could be done to impress. Perhaps they had stinged on this to cut cost. Ended off the meal with a coffee latte. I’m just glad they didn’t pour me a coffee out of a coffee machine and this was done by a barista, although the froth layer was way too much.
Nonetheless, I very pleasing meal. Went around taking some photos and soaking in the chill Friday afternoon mood. Staff was also kind enough to show me the second level which was a private dining area...
Read moreMy server was Chengheang. I will start by saying I came inside unaware of the sophisticated atmosphere and was still treated with the utmost respect and class. My chair was pulled out and adjusted to me as I took my seat. I also had a designated place to sit my purse which provided comfort as I am uncomfortable dangling it on the back of my chair. The attention to detail is simply remarkable here. They provided a Christmas special menu which I declined as I intend to try foie gras, oysters and desert from the standard menu. I am later going to a different location to again try foie gras as a Christmas treat to myself.
I was blown away by the atmosphere. I chose a glass of red wine which was opened right in front of me and it could not have been fresher. The wine was the Topaz Rogue BORDEAUX SUPÉRIEUR which I highly recommend because one glass was more than enough. I paired it with two oyster gillardeau, pan-fried foie gras (with mango) and crème brûlée. The foie gras tasted amazing and practically melted in my mouth. I would compare the taste to butter with a savory accent. For desert I chose the recommended crème brûlée which was my first time trying it.
The staff was very attentive and courteous which aided me in relaxing due to me not feeling appropriately dressed. To be transparent, I typically dress very causal and wear minimal jewelry as to not exude an air of arrogance but in this environment… such attire would have complimented the ambiance. The restroom was very clean and instead of paper towels for drying your hands, cloth hand towels were provided. The total for my meal was less than $90 excluding the tip. I would highly recommend this location who may be dining alone or...
Read moreI truly resonate with the concept behind Thalias Group. Their restaurants, Topaz (upscale) and Khema (casual, though still luxurious), hold a special place in my heart, and I absolutely love both of them. Once again, this visit exceeded my expectations and proved to be an exceptional experience.
First and foremost, I was impressed by the peaceful atmosphere of the restaurant. The space was sophisticated yet calming, creating a perfect setting for a memorable dining experience. The quality of service was equally remarkable, with the staff displaying thoughtful attention to every detail, making me feel truly cared for and comfortable throughout the meal. The level of service here is truly a key part of what makes this restaurant stand out.
The food, as always, was of the highest quality. Each dish was prepared with precision, offering fresh and flavorful ingredients. The wine selection, too, was expertly chosen, pairing wonderfully with the dishes and enhancing the entire meal. The attention to detail in every aspect of the dining experience is what makes it so enriching and enjoyable.
Additionally, there was an unexpected surprise during my visit (which I won’t elaborate on here). It was a gesture that further highlighted the warmth and care that the restaurant extends to its guests. It’s these little touches that make dining here so special.
Thalias Group consistently delivers top-tier quality and service, and I look forward to more wonderful experiences in the future. I can’t wait for...
