I traveled through Barrie the other day and stopped off at this new place called Butter Bay Pastry House. Now I love baked goods and can be hard to impress, so I was veeeery pleasantly surprised by this place. First impressions: excellent. New place in a new building, nice clean style, not overbearing or trying to be too cute, but a pleasant place with a nice atmosphere. Staff invariably was very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable about their goods. I actually me the owner, who was very friendly and was happy to talk about the place. As it turns out, she is a professionally trained pastry chef, and it shows. They have tonnes of different baked goods, from croissants to quiches and muffins. I understand they also do sandwiches, which I will try next time. Now here is where it gets interesting, the flavours are something I had never seen before. Now often this can be gimmicky, but that is not the case here. I first tried a muffin. I can't exactly remember what was in it, but it was delicious. Nice texture, super fresh (obviously), moist and packed great flavour. Then I moved on to what I understand may be one of their signature items, the pistachio croissant (see picture). OMG, this was sooo good. I had never had anything like it. Lots of flavour, but at the same time it was subtle, clearly baked by a very talented professional. Eating this was an experience and I loved it. I also bought a quiche, which I took home. It disappeared in no time with my kids fighting over the last crumbs:-) Absolutely excellent. So I will be making this a regular stop when in Barrie, it's absolutely worth it, I can see this becoming. destination of sorts.

One word of warning, though. If you intend to take some of the goods home for your family and your drive is longer than 7 minutes, make sure you keep the goods out of reach (preferably the boot of the car) as otherwise none of it may make it home:-)

Great place, great food, definitely...

I had really high hopes for this pastry shop as it specializes in croissants. I've been here three times now and every time has been worse than the last. As someone who moved to Barrie from Toronto's St Clair Ave W which has numerous croissant and pastry shops and cafes, I was hopeful to find the same here and support local.

The first croissant I had was the classic, but it was so buttery that it was oozing butter and you could not even hold it in your hands without butter dripping everywhere. I felt incredibly gross while eating it (and afterwards too). The second croissant (almond) was incredibly dry, not buttery at all, and was flat and stale. The third croissant (also almond) lacked the layered honeycomb structure altogether, tasted "week-old" stale and almost NO almond filling. See photo.

My partner had the same experience overall. He also tried the strawberry custard filled croissant and found it to be way TOO heavy (in weight and in terms of the amount of filling). It also lacked the honeycomb structure of a proper layered croissant. I hope this will be taken as constructive criticism because I would like to see consistently good croissants in Barrie.

It seems like too many cooks in the kitchen, not enough balance in butter, fillings and zero consistency across batches and croissant types.

I hope to try it again in the distant future and have a...

A Match Made in Dessert Heaven – Butter Bay & Dipped TO!

I recently had the pleasure of indulging in an absolutely stunning and delicious treat box from Butter Bay in Barrie and Dipped TO, and I have to say—it was pure perfection from presentation to taste!

The croissants from Butter Bay were a masterpiece—flaky, buttery, and drizzled with white chocolate and raspberry coulis, topped with fresh raspberries. The balance of sweetness and tartness was just right, making each bite feel indulgent yet light.

Paired with Dipped TO’s chocolate-covered strawberries, these desserts were a dream! The strawberries were generously coated in premium chocolate, with elegant heart designs and a flawless, glossy finish. The pink sugar-coated strawberries added a beautiful touch, making them just as delightful to look at as they were to eat.

To round it all off, the box included chocolate-dipped pretzels and heart-shaped cookies with intricate icing details, showcasing the artistry behind each piece. Everything was fresh, high-quality, and crafted with care.

This combination is perfect for Valentine’s Day, special occasions, or simply treating yourself to something extraordinary. Whether you’re a local or just visiting Barrie, Butter Bay and Dipped TO are must-tries! I’ll definitely be ordering again.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five stars for both...
