If i I could leave a worse review I would. This was my first time at Chaopaya and was supposed to be a rare date night for my husband and I. We really can't afford to go out often so this was a big treat. Well right from the get go we were disappointed. Their was nobody at the front to greet us and show us to our table and when finally somebody did come it was a really young teenager with no manners. The waiter, whom we later found out was the owner, came to our table looking rushed and impatient, although we were ready to order. He said " what you want?" In an irritated way. Well, we ordered. My husband got the CRAB FRIED RICE which he said was very BLAND I got the THAI FISH CURRY with a side of rice. Now, on the bottom of the second page of the menu, their is a a picture of 3 chilies. 1 for mild, 2 for medium and 3 for spicy. Well, I'm east Indian and cook and eat spicy food on a regular basis so I asked for that. What I got was inedible. It was so spicy that I had to order milk and even that didn't cool my mouth, lips, throat, chest and stomach. The God awful pain was unbearable. I tried eating the plain rice to help after the milk. Nothing worked. I tried my husbands food and couldn't taste a thing because my tongue was numbed to flavour from my order. The warmth of his food just served to exaserbate the problem. I tried to have a few bites of my food but ended up not eating. I honestly thought I was going to have to go to the hospital. So nobody showed up to give us our bill so we got up and went to the front, where the young teen took our money. I asked for a manager and he pointed to his dad, our server who spoke rudimentary English and was serving the entire the whole restaurant, which is 3 large dining areas on his own. So I was to make my complaint to this child. I mentioned that the meal was inedible due to an excessive use of chillies. He tried to say I wasn't used to spice. Since I eat curries and spicy food almost every day that wasn't plausible. He then said well somebody else ordered it that way. What that had to do with my complaint I don't know. For all I know the other customers food was inedible as well. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE INEDIBLE FOOD TERRIBLE SERVICE A TRAGEDY
Hire some servers , a host/hostess and a general manager. Work on customer service and serving Show that you care about your business. Do a cheap makeover. The building looks like it's about to be condemned by the city of Barrie. And most definitely get a new chef! I had heard good things online about this restaurant and the place was full when we went last night, so I thought it was worth a try....
Read moreI cannot believe I haven’t left a review before now. My husband & I rave about Chaopya to everyone we know because we’ve loved every single dish we’ve ever had here! Everything is fresh & delicious and the owners are so kind and friendly!
There’s something for everyone on the menu. Ranging from very mild to spicy. (Though, I’ve never had something so hot that I couldn’t handle it)
The appetizers are fantastic and reasonably priced. I could eat an entire meal of the Satay skewers (and the tiny cucumber salad it comes with). Or the Thai Spring Rolls with the sweet & sour sauce. Yum!
My favourite dish is the Pineapple Shrimp Curry. The shrimp are large and plentiful and cooked to perfection. The coconut cream sauce is divine; I dream of it for days after!
We’ve had the Pad Thai, the Emerald Chicken Curry, the Chicken & Cashew Nuts, the Dry Beef Curry and the Shrimp & Cashew Nuts…. All of them were fantastic!
I’ve also fallen in love with their Thai Iced Tea. So creamy and sweet! I’d never heard of it before coming to Chaopaya.
Their building is charming; a converted Victorian home. Inside, you’ll find hand-carved wooden friezes hanging on the walls. In the lobby, you are greeted by a charming Aquarium & colourful flower garlands hanging on the walls and draped over Thai statues.
Even the dish-ware is gorgeous. We learned they were sourced directly from factory in Thailand during one of the owners trips home.
