There are very few authentic Gujarati restaurants in the GTA. Most of the restaurants where you eat Indian food comes from the Northern/Punjab region of India. Lately we have a trend of South Indian/Sri Lankan restaurants and foods. All the above are good, but unique is the Gujarati food which comes from the Gujarat state/province of India.
At this location there used to be a Gujarati buffet which closed down and this Shriji has opened a few years ago. Finally made the trip to this place.
The thali consists of 2 vegetable dishes out of the four available, a daal/lentil or a kadhi (spiced yogurt soupy dish) and either rice or Khichdi (a mushed rice and green mung connotation). We took one tendli/tindora/ivy gourd curry with potatoes and a Oondhiyoo (a variety mixed Vegetables with a chickpea flour stuffed with fenugreek/methi and spices dumpling) and the daal and rice. The thali also comes 3 chappatis which are unique in the sense they are flat bread made on tawa/griddle. The chappatis are supposed to be paper thin and when cooked properly fluff.
The tendli and potatoes were spiced to perfection, the potatoes slightly over cooked, but great. The Oondhiyoo (if translated means upside down) was great and had tons of veggies but very few dumplings/moothiya very few. Spiced correctly. All Gujarati dishes have a slight sweet taste as well because the guud/jaggery/hard raw rock brown sugar. The only downside on the dishes were that they were too oily/greasy. Would prefer if they cooked with less oil. Asked for fried green chillies in the side, but they turned out to not spicy at all (not their fault, natures, BTW). The chappatis were 10/10. Perfectly cooked, paper thin and had the customary two layers (proof that they puffed). Could have those 365 days! For those who haven't tried these highly recommend to try. The Indian naans are traditionally not cooked in every households, but chappatis are, but the Gujarati chappatis are the best and here they reflected the true chappatis.
We also ordered 4 Bajara Rotlas - Pearl Millet thick chappatis made again on a griddle. They sold by pairs (2/$2). They were amazing as well. For those who love ancient grains, these are a MUST TRY.
A perfect place for take out, although sit is not bad. No table service. The self serve area was clean. Hindi songs in the background. Typical.
Also want to try Jowar Rotlas next time. Sorghum thick chappatis. Another ancient grain if you haven't tried...
Read moreCustomer Service / Counter Staff ( Minus Ten -10); Food Quality : OK I saw their Instagram ad on Tuesday 5 Aug. 2025 and decided to visit on Wednesday 6 Aug. especially since I saw that they offered Gujarati style food, which I like as I have lived in Mulund, a Gujarati populated area in Bombay. I was happy to see that they had Vada, Dhokla, Samosa, Dabeli, Patra, etc., which are my favourite. After perusing the availability, I was shocked and stuned by the ARROGANT AND RUDE Behaviour of the Girl at the Counter who rudely asked "Yes what do you want to order". I was taken aback as I never expected such behaviour, still I camly proceeded to order. Since I am Diabetic and saw that she was packing sweet chutney, I politely requested to takeback the sweet chutney and give me green chutney. Her response was extremely shocking and rude - she out right REFUSED and said we dont give green chutney with vada / samosa and if you want you have to pay extra. I requested again and when I saw that there was no change in her behaviour, I had to be firm and a little harsh asking if they were catering to customer needs or enforcing their choice on the customer. After haggling, she finally put a container of green chutney literally throwing it in my packet as if she was doing a favour. Even the young man at the counter was arguing and lecturing - I had to tell him to shut up.
My Question / Suggestion to the Owners: Do you want customers or you want such NEGATIVE REVIEWS. You may get ethnic Gujarati customers, because they crave for special food, but will by word of mouth say negative things, which willl hurt your business. If a customer tells / requests your staff of their Dietary Preferance, they should make adjustments rather than insisting on serving according to their wish.
Seriously, I love Gujarati veg food as my friends from childhood and my neghibours were Gujaratis. But the behaviour of Shriji staff has put me off badly - even though I liked the taste of the Vada, Samosa and Patra - I will think twice before visiting your outlet again.
Hope, if I ever visit again, there will be...
Read moreHonestly, I hate to write this review as this is possibly my favorite place in GTA. Everything is good, the staff, the food, the cost, the ambience.
Unfortunately, our last visit left a really bad taste.
We -a party of 3 families - visited the place the past weekend half an hour before closing and ordered a take out: full containers of Undhiyu, Gujrati Samosas, Lilva Kachoris, Vada etc
However when we reached home and opened the container of Undhiyu it instantly smelled off and rancid.
We called and asked our friends (who also had ordered Undhiyu) about their take out and when they opened it, it was the same case. It smelled off. We all had to garbage it.
Looks like the entire batch had gone bad and without checking the food quality the employees were packing it. This is a huge food quality and health issue.
Onto the samosas.I and my friends travel a long way especially for the Gujrati Samosas because they are closest to what you get in India when it comes to ingredients and spice levels. This time, they were decent but tasted different - there weren't much spices in the potato masala nor was it spicy. Taste bland. Looks like their chef or management has changed or they are hurriedly cooking left over stuff and trying to sell below quality stuff by the end of the day. So this was another let down.
Overall, this was a really bad experience for me and my friends. Not sure if we will be visiting again. Also to others, if ordering a take out, please check the quality of your food items before...
