I must admit that my recent visit to the Spud Co Fry Shack was an unexpected deviation from my usual culinary escapades. Fast food establishments rarely grace my discerning palate, but curiosity led me to this humble fry haven.
Upon entering, I was greeted not by a maître d', but by a cheerful teenager sporting a cap adorned with the Spud Co logo. The ambiance was decidedly unpretentious—no crystal chandeliers or velvet drapes here. Instead, fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting an unapologetic glow on the menu boards.
My order—a simple combo of a classic poutine—was placed with remarkable efficiency. The cashier's nimble fingers danced across the register, and within moments,
No sommelier appeared to recommend a pairing; instead, I chose from an array of condiments: ketchup, or vinegar,
As I settled into a red plastic booth, I observed the kitchen staff. Their choreography was mesmerizing: all in a seamless rhythm. The fryer's sizzle became our background music, replacing the usual strains of Debussy.
The pièce de résistance arrived swiftly: a mountain of fries crowned with a generous blanket of cheese curds and velvety gravy. My fork hesitated—no silver cutlery here, just a sturdy plastic utensil. But the aroma! It transported me to the bustling streets of Montreal, where bistros serve comfort on porcelain plates.
The fries—crisp, yet yielding—were a revelation. Their humble origins belied their flavor. The poutine, a symphony of textures, harmonized beautifully. The gravy clung to the curds like a secret whispered in a dimly lit alley. I closed my eyes, momentarily forgetting my Michelin-starred past.
As I devoured my meal, I marveled at the Spud Co Fry Shack's efficiency. No languid courses, no fussy presentations—just speed and satisfaction. The staff, moved with purpose. Perhaps this was their secret ingredient: passion for the humble spud.

Read moreI’m so glad I stumbled upon this local hole-in-the-wall spot! I ordered the yam, quinoa, and oat burger along with the vegan buffalo chicken poutine. Both absolutely blew me away.
The burger was perfectly crafted with amazing texture and flavour. You can tell real thought went into the blend of ingredients, but the real star was the vegan buffalo chicken poutine. My first time trying vegan poutine and WOW. It had that perfect buffalo kick, the gravy was rich and satisfying, and everything came together beautifully. They didn’t cheap out on the sauce at all. Every single fry from top to bottom was coated in that delicious gravy. No sad, dry fries at the bottom here! The fries stayed crispy despite being generously sauced throughout.
What really impressed me was the attention to detail in every aspect—from the food presentation to the overall execution. I found out that the owner is an Ironman triathlete, and you can absolutely see how that discipline and commitment to excellence translates into his business and the food he serves. Every element was thoughtfully prepared.
The atmosphere is cozy and unpretentious—exactly what you want from a local spot. The quality of the plant-based options here rivals any restaurant in the city. This place deserves way more recognition!
I’ll definitely be back to try more of the menu. If you’re looking for creative and delicious food made with care, don’t sleep on this...
Read moreExperienced Spud Shack for the first time today, we didn't even know it existed until we glanced backwards when on the train and it caught our eye. After looking up reviews online and seeing all the praise we decided to give it a shot. A hopeful experience greeted with disappointment. This place just SCREAMS Hipster, the atmosphere was weird and the music was atrocious and loud, sad beats with odd ear piercing sounds, it was like someone wasn't answering their phone and added a bad beat to it. this kind of music played the whole time we were there, it really ruined the experience for us. This place is a food truck stuffed into a building. The tables were either sticky or need to be re-finished. The menu was right next to the till so if you wanted a minute to look over the menu you'd be in the way of any customer coming in who already knew what they wanted. I ordered the small house salad and a small Montreal poutine. The portions are huge which is nice, I could barley finish the salad let alone thinking of starting on the poutine. The fries are limp, fresh out of the fryer and they had no sort of "crisp" to them. This isn't really a sit-in kind of restaurant at all. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here again, if I was already in the...
