While I’m not opposed to non-meat burgers per se, I’ve tried many over the years with varying level of success. Generally, the thing that usually turns me off “veggie” burgers is the texture. Recently A&W has been really promoting their “Beyond Meat” burger which they claim is made from 100% plant-based protein. Sounds kinda vague, doesn’t it?

What exactly is “plant-based” protein? Is this a “veggie” burger or is this something else? When you go to their website, the list of ingredients include red beets (for colour and vitamins), coconut oil (for a juicy flavour), yellow peas (for the protein), pomegranates (for vitamins), mung beans (for texture), rice (for protein), potatoes (a binder), and apples (for antioxidants). The burger is topped with lettuce, tomato, red onions, pickles, ketchup, mustard, and mayo (and you can add cheese to your burger at an additional cost).

Okay, that’s a lot of information… but how does it look and taste? The burger itself looked fairly “normal” with the exception that the meatless patty looked slightly lighter in colour than you’d expect with a meat patty. Full disclosure – I added a couple of onion rings to my burger as I expected the texture of the patty to be a bit off. The burger actually tasted pretty good… my best description would be that it tasted like a burger with a lot of fixins’.

As I expected, the Beyond Meat patty did have something which was missing in the texture – like it was too soft. However, the addition of the crunchy onion rings helped to camouflage the missing texture of the patty.

Would I order it again? Not sure. If you look at the nutritional information, the Beyond Meat burger actually has more calories, fat, and sodium than their regular Teen Burger so I wouldn’t necessarily consider this a “healthy” alternative. Also note that this burger is cooked on the same grill as their meat burgers (and the mayo and cheese contain dairy) so this wouldn’t really be considered vegan friendly. But if you’re looking for an alternative to a meat burger, this might be an option that you’d want to try out.

On August 16th, I came back to A&W because they were having a special promotion going to support people suffering from MS (A&W would donated $2 from the sale of every Teen Burger). As it turned out, they had a sign on their front door saying that they were all sold our of their Beyond Meat burgers (I guess they must be really popular). I stuck with my Teen Burger and made sure to stuff a few fries in it (does anyone else do this?).

I heard that it took about 2 months before the Beyond Meat Burger came back in stock. Have you tried...

Our family came to this location for lunch. We ordered 3 burger combos with drinks and onion rings for dine-in.

First of all, the restaurant was only 30% full by the time we arrived. However, ALL the tables we checked were DIRTY with sticky ketchup residue or crumbs. We managed to find one table that was slightly less dirty and I cleaned it with WetOnes.

Secondly, after we placed the order, the cashier was too busy chatting with her other colleague at the till in a different language. When she gave us the fountain drink, she tipped the drink over. Luckily the lid was on and the spillage was minimal. However, she didn’t even apologize to us for her carelessness. By the time we had our full order, the spillage was still there on the counter and the cashier (or other staff) had no intention of cleaning up the mess.

Thirdly, the beef patty of the burger I had was on the drier side. It tasted like it was cooked too long or left in the heat lamp for too long.

Finally, the decor inside the restaurant was old and dirty. One of the staff was cleaning the tables during our dining. Unfortunately, I didn’t see her using a spray bottle of cleaner or disinfectant. She cleaned about 4-5 tables using the same cloth without any cleaner or disinfectant spraying onto the table. I am not sure how “clean” the tables were after the cleaning.

I have been to many A&W restaurants and this is by far the worst regarding customer services and...

Me and my son ordered meal. Two double buddy burgers and one chucken burger. It was drive through order. We waited for our food when we came home and saw our order it was wrong. Double buddy burgers have only single beef patty and instead of chicken there was beef burger. I called back , girl who answer my phone apologied and ask me to come back and take the right food. I told her , I don’t live close by. She advised me to come another day. I said ok I will come other day . She took my phone and name. When I came next week to claim my food. The manager her name is Cris so rude.. , her way of talking totally un acceptable and dry. She just accused mein ji I front of other customers like I’m lying. Why I would lie about food. I’ felt so humiliated in front of other customers. I showed them my credit card statement. Still she didn’t believe. I don’t know what kind of manager she is. Hopefully no one else get treated like me by her. Specially good luck to those employees who works with her. Hopefully someone can educates her what is good manager does for the business . She shouldn’t be working there if she doesn’t know how to deal with customers....

[Update] September 14, 2020 - Had to wait a few minutes for my burger in a lettuce wrap but its morning so so big deal I am happy they serve lunch at breakfast unlike most places. My food was brought to me by a polite young lady who was wearing a mask but I could tell she was smiling underneath it. All staff observed wearing masks. Thank you for your front line service and for upholding the safety protocols set forth by government to combat the spread of pandemic! --------------------------------------------------------------------- - best service and polite staff who make the best chicken lettuce wraps. mmmm yum.

I think I found the best A&W in Burnaby & New Westminster (it's right on the border). I have to say, the 3 girls working there are always very nice, polite and friendly, and they keep this place clean! 👍👍 Definitely a bonus. And they make the best tasting burgers and perfect onion rings. The food is always well prepared, and never sloppy like other burger places.. We really enjoyed eating here plus it's open 24/7. Hands down the best A&W we've ever been to. THANKS for the great service too!
