Sushi Yoi is a busy little Japanese restaurant located on Rosser Street in Burnaby, right next to the large grove of Japanese cherry blossom trees (bet this place is a great place to have lunch during the spring).
Having been on my list for quite some time, we finally dropped by for lunch in mid-November and started out with an order of Prawn Tempura ($8.95). Deep-fried to perfection, the prawns were coated in a light and crispy batter.
The Chicken Teriyaki ($9.95) was prepared exactly how we like it – perched on a large bed of bean sprouts and served on a sizzling hot plate. I love when chicken teriyaki has a nice crispness to the skin.
The Sockeye Salmon Oshi ($10.95) was seared which gave it a nice rich, oily, and buttery texture. I like that they don’t use too much rice in their oshi sushi pieces but this also means they’re a bit on the small side.
Loved how the Sockeye Salmon Carpaccio ($12.95) was presented. Their sashimi pieces are pretty solid and this dish had a bit of a kick from the jalapeño slices but it was tempered with the mayo drizzle that they use.
Last up on our first visit was the Gommae ($3.95) which is a simple appetizer of boiled spinach with sesame dressing. I think they might have overdone it a bit with the dressing though.
I found myself in the area about a month later and dropped by for lunch again. It was pretty hopping here and it seems like they do a lot of takeout orders as I could see a number of delivery drivers coming by to pick up their orders.
Remembering how good their oshi sushi was, I ordered the Unagi Oshi ($9.95). As previously mentioned, their oshi sushi tends to be on the small side but I do like that they don’t use too much rice. This dish was nice and creamy with just a hint of spiciness.
I also decided to order their BBQ Salmon Kama ($4.95) which is the neck or collar area of the fish. While there’s a bit of work involved with all of the bones, the meat here tends to have a lot of buttery oiliness (which I enjoy). For the price, these were really...
Read moreThis is a Chinese operated sushi place with a vast variety of menu choices and affordable prices. It seems popular for the people living in this area.
1st: Groupon for 2 for dinner, food arrived fast and we got a seated at table for 4 so it was comfortable. I ordered their limited time dessert (forgot what it was) and it was pretty good. We got 2 cans for the drink. Overall service was okay.
2nd: Tried items on their regular menu for lunch, overall it was decent for the price. The waitress checked in on us often.
3rd: Groupon for 2 again, food arrived in the order of miso soup, edamame, drinks (1 can diluted in 2 cups filled with ice), sushi, yakisoba, and lastly the sushi salad (which should've came before the noodles for a meal)... all within 5 minutes, which is nice if you needed fast food I suppose.
When she brought the salad, our small table barely had room, but instead of helping us with organizing the plates she simply shoved the plate into my hands and left. True that they were almost full when we arrived, but some tables left already when we placed our order, so I'm not sure what's with the rush to get all the food onto our table when we literally just finished the soup. I was gonna order another sushi roll from the regular menu but glad we didn't since we'd have no room on the table for it lol.
The food was okay for the price, nothing extraordinary, but with the disappointing service, there are much better sushi options in Burnaby area. I came back because my first two visits were decent, but after my third visit I likely...
Read moreWe regularly visit family and have come her a few times because it’s nearby and it’s normally pretty good. But this time they were clueless. I took my Sister here on sat and we specifically said she was celiac and asked what was gluten free, And the staff did not seem to know or understand. But brought us the gluten free soy sauce. She ordered a spicy tuna roll and 2 oshi sushi rolls- ( both of which she can order normally from anywhere without issue). The spicy tuna roll came out ans before she ate it I noticed it had tempura peices in it. We told the waitress ans she said that was normal and how it comes. (I’ve never once seen a spicy tuna roll with anything other than tuna/ spicy mayo/ rice/ nori) We asked to have it replaced with a tuna maki roll with spicy mayo. And asked to verify that her other oshi roll had nothing on it that had gluten and they said yes. That it only had mayo and jalapeño on top. After eating a few bites we noticed the sauce ontop and asked about it…. Ans it’s a soy/ brown sugar sauce. ( the second ingredient in soy sauce is gluten). We were entirely unhappy and she couldn’t eat any of her dinner and ended up being sick that night from her Celiac disease/ gluten allergy. besides removing the first tuna roll from our order they mad no concessions to make up for their other mistakes or apologize. They should educate themselves on their menu and how to deal...
