So, Yan’s Garden has been on my list of places to try for a number of years (I suppose it’s partly because I used to watch “Wok with Yan” back in the 80’s). I’ve been hesitant to stop by here in the past mainly because parking always looked difficult here as the parking lot is generally always full. We stopped by in early February (during the snowy weather) so we managed to grab one of the available parking spaces. A good thing too because the lot filled up rather quickly afterwards. We were surprised at how large this restaurant is because, from the outside, it appears to be a small location. However, despite the large footprint, the seating seemed a bit cramped… especially since they offer push-cart dim sum. First up was the Steamed Beef Rice Rolls ($5.28) and Pork Siu Mai ($5.28) topped with fish roe – staples for our dim sum outings. Two other classic Cantonese dim sum dishes followed quickly thereafter… Steamed Beef Balls ($5.58) and Steamed Chicken Feet ($5.28) in black bean sauce. The chicken feet were fairly tender but the dish seemed to be missing the black beans. The thing with push-cart style dim sum is that you have to wait sometimes for the dish you’re looking for to show up. I also find that we tend to over order with push-cart dim sum. Our next dishes were the Pan-Fried Turnip Cake ($6.99) and Honeycomb Tripe ($5.28). I know that tripe (and chicken feet) can be a bit of an acquired taste for some people but you should really give it a try. By themselves, they don’t have much flavour but they do take on the flavour of the sauce and the texture is quite different than other dishes. Their Stuffed Eggplant $5.58) turned out really nice with the perfect amount of light crispness to the bite and a generous filling. For dessert, we picked up these amazingly cute Mango and Lychee Bunnies ($5.58). They were almost too cute to eat… almost. The mango was really good with a perfectly smooth and velvety texture. Overall, the food here is pretty good. Service is a bit haphazard (they mistakenly marked a dish down twice for us and we had to flag them down to correct it).

A friend recommended this place. Over the decades I drove by this place without trying out the food. We made reservations & were happy we did. The rating is based on dinner for 4. The rating’s based on everyone’s experience: (with 5 being the highest) Ambience: 4. Place can accommodate a group of 10. Food: 4 – we ordered the combo special at $118 for 4 people consisting of a appetizer platter, soup of the day, live crab with ginger & egg noodles, sauteed prawns with green, half empress chicken, steamed rice with dessert (checkout the photos). If you have big eaters, the combo special for 4 people isn’t enough food. In addition we ordered the live BC crab with noodles at $24.88 & live lobster with egg noodles at $46.88. A current special on crab & lobster that was worth the price. Value: 4 (Several set menus with varying prices for 10 people, combos for 4 or 6 people. Best value seems to be the party tray combo for 10 people where you choose 6 items from a list – not sure about the portions. Location: 4. Located right on the south corner off Lougheed Hwy and North Road on a shopping plaza. There’s free parking out front with a wheelchair ramp leading to the restaurant. Service: 4 - frequently changed our used plates & friendly staff. Hours: open 7 days a week from 10 am to 9 pm.

We came at 10am on a Saturday and the restaurant was empty when we got there. When we left at 11:30 the whole restaurant was basically full. They serve everything in the carts. There's some things that they won't have in the carts which then they will tell you to tick off on the paper to order it. We ordered steamed beef trip in special sauce ($9.28), steamed rice flour roll with scallops and seaweed ($9.88), deep fried sesame balls ($8.58), deep fried milk custard ($8.58), pork and shrimp dumpling shao mai ($8.38), har gao ($8.38), deep fried taro ($8.38), steamed pork ribs ($7.88). Tea is $1.50 each person The steamed beef tripe in special sauce had a strong tripe flavour in a good way. You could taste the innards flavour. Some restaurants bleach it and clean it really well so that you can taste it but this place has cleaned it just enough. Flavour was good and I would order this again Rice roll with seaweed and scallops. There were slices of scallops throughout the rice roll. This rice roll is different from the rice rolls you usually have at dimsum. It's not chewy like the ones you find at other restaurants. Instead it's really smooth and has a slight rice flavour. According to my grandma, this is the way it's meant to be. The ones that are chewy and bouncy is the new way of doing it now. This one is based on personal preference. If you like traditional style, this is the way to go. Deep fried sesame balls were not too sweet on the inside but the outside was too thick (also not chewy enough) and it wasn't crispy enough outside. We found out later that they have a different kind that's the thinner one. This one is pushed out on carts and not on the sheet so be warned if you are looking for the thin skin one. The shrimp dumplings or har gao were okay. Lots of shrimp inside and very bouncy but the outside skin was a tad too thick The taro fried dumpling was not crispy and flaky enough for me. The inside filling was pretty decent The pork shrimp shao mai dumpling was pretty good. Lots of pork little shrimp which is how it should be. It had a good bite too it and was well flavored The pork ribs were not bad. Meat was soft and portion was big. The fried milk dessert was interesting and definitely not what we were expecting. You drink the milk custard that's inside. Outside is crispy but also not hot. Inside was cold as well. Interesting but would only order it once. Overall dimsum was not bad. They have dishes here you might not find elsewhere. No major faults. Some of the servers pushing the carts can be a bit pushy. They try to sell you the dishes that have been sitting their the longest. Other than that the other servers are really nice and fast. They have servers specifically just to pour tea and get the bill. Would I recommend it? Probably not as none of the dishes stand out. But if you are looking for some solid run of the mill dimsum. Then this place is actually not bad

Came here on a Sunday for lunch and it was hectic. I understand it was lunch hour and it was very busy but the service we received was beyond poor. We had reservation and got seated within 15 minutes but others who didn't, had to wait 40 - 50 mins. After we got seated, we were given the lunch menu, while others got tea right away, we got nothing. 30 mins after, there were still no servers coming to us. Good thing we were able to grab food from the cart that goes around. We tried calling the servers a few times, but we were ignored by multiple of them. We got tired of waiting and I went to the server station to get water for my 5 yr. Old niece who's been asking for some. One male server saw me and gave me "what are you doing, can't you wait look". And handed me the rest of the water, one very small portion of soy sauce and hot sauce (there were 4 of us). And we've been eating our dimsum no soysauce. We once again asked for the more food that's on the menu, this time, on the 4th time it was a success. As I mentioned above, I understand that during the time we were there it could get busy and these things can happen. But the thing that made me want to leave this review is what the guy did after I paid our bill. Since I wasn't satisfied with the service, I mean common, we didn't get what we wanted and was not properly served, I still left 10% tip. People I was with didn't want to leave any due to our experience. The guy who processed my payment literally threw my receipt at me and even with an annoyed look. People I was with couldn't believe and I couldn't believe it. But we just left and promised not to come back here and leave this review. worst dining experience I've ever had. Oh and they charged us for tea for $7 which other restaurants offer for free.

Update July 2023 Tried this place again since it is close to me. The carts dont come around enough. The core dim sum items arent on the menu to order. You have to wait for a cart where the food may be luke warm. The day i went i was a bit luckier and some of the food was actually steaming hot. Ha gao and chicken feet for example. Probably just lucky timing. Shrimp Rice crepes were no where to be found We finally got them and asked for a bit more of the soya sauce and she seemed frustrated by this ask and basically drowned our food and got it all over the table. Did not return with a towel or anything to clean it up. Not even some extra napkins. See pics. Then to be surprised with a ridiculous “tea fee” That was the last straw. If you told me at the beginning there would be a fee, i wouldnt be annoyed. I checked the menu after quickly to see if i could find a note about it and i couldnt. If its there, its in small letters. Previous Have gone here for dimsum probably least 5 times if u come late the dimsum is luke warm at best I came earlier last week and same experience. Dimsum from the cart was cold. Ordered a second and told them but they could care less. Dinner. Had peking duck here once. It was good The fish maw soup was garbage The second course with the duck was better At this point. Ill be trying other places. Consistency is crucial. If the dimsum came hot everytime. Id keep coming back. The dim sum is good when its hot. I pay for hot food, not food that has been sitting.

I had the unfortunate experience of dining at this dim sum place, and I cannot stress enough how utterly disappointed I was, primarily due to their appalling food hygiene standards. It was evident from the moment we walked in that cleanliness was not a priority. The tables were sticky and dirty, and the sight of uncleaned dishes left on neighboring tables made my stomach turn. But it didn't stop there; the real nightmare unfolded when we received our food. I couldn't help but question the safety of what we were about to eat. The dim sum dishes arrived lukewarm, and some even appeared undercooked. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a server handling food without gloves or proper utensils. It was a complete disregard for basic food safety practices. To make matters worse, the waitress displayed a complete lack of professionalism. She was rude, never bothered to refill our drinks, and seemed disinterested in our concerns. In short, my experience at this dim sum place was nothing short of a nightmare, with the poor food hygiene taking the spotlight. I strongly advise against dining here if you value your health and well-being.
