Canela Vegan Bakery & Cafe — Restaurant in Calgary

I've been a regular customer at Canela even before they switched locations. I'm always super happy to support vegan places and I love watching these local businesses grow and thrive! I've thought a while about writing this review and I'm hoping it can be taken constructively. I'm not sure what's been going on this last year, but the pastries the last few times I've been have been very dry and not up to the quality I've gotten in the past. The pastries taste like they're 2-3 days old. I used to get the pizza rolls all the time as well but the filling amount has decreased so I haven't gotten one in a while. I ordered a slice of cake the other day and the girl who cut it was sawing it off with crumbs everywhere and the piece was so small, I asked nicely if I could get another one. Shouldn't the cakes be pre-cut to ensure a consistent size/slice? This bakery leans more on the expensive side as well so it was frustrating to see the products decreased in both size and quality. The front staff is also slow and inefficient. I feel like I have to repeat my order numerous times and this isn' t just a one time experience, and the system of who takes the order, and who charges the customer - is there even a system? Seems different every time I come in. The front staff just needs to be on it a bit more, I chalked that up to learning curves when they first opened in Inglewood but it hasn't changed. The drinks and treats at this bakery are just to die for, and the staff has been warm and friendly every time I've been! We visited during YYC Hot Chocolate Fest one time, and although I can't remember what the drink was called, it was delicious - I believe it had something interesting like cardamom in it.

I was present during a recent incident where a mask-less patron was asked (very politely) to wear a mask while in the cafe, and was offered multiple other options for them to enjoy their products while also being sensitive towards the safety of the bakery's other customers and staff. This patron was horrifically rude, and is now trying to claim that they were "shamed" and "screamed at" - neither of which happened. This individual then turned to those of us respectful individuals patiently awaiting our orders, and snarkily asked if they were making us uncomfortable. One polite man said it was fine in order to hopefully end the awkwardness this patron was causing, but the rest of us just stood there, flabbergasted that someone could be so cruel to a small business owner during a time where small businesses are struggling to stay afloat.
