Been here twice, and twice we leave feeling regret. I have been to countless Korean restaurants across North America and my experiences here were far from the top.
The first visit my family made, the service was very friendly but the food was sub-par, the meal we had ordered was very salty for our liking. However we just assumed that the food was tailored for western mouths and left it at that.
Our second and most recent visit, we ordered a Large Soondae and a gamja (potato/meat) soup (감자탕). When the Soondae came, we were shocked to see how small it was. On the menu it says that it would serve 3-4, in our unprofessional eyes it looked like it would maybe satisfy 2 people at most, as a meal including side dishes. We've had small proportions at other restaurants before, so this wouldn't have been a big issue if not for the fact that it cost us nearly $50 for it. It got even worse when we tried it, I was shocked that a restaurant could sell us something of such poor quality. The soondae was extremely dry, bland and brittle, was one of the worst ones I've tasted. I've had $8 instant soondae that tasted much better. When we were finished, it was left 2/3 full on the table when we headed out.
The gamja soup wasn't nearly as bad, the meat was well cooked and tender, however the soup was very bland and it did not have any potatoes in it, which I found quite amusing seeing as its name translates to "potato soup", but I guess French fries didn't even originate from France, so I'll give it a pass :/
I would like to think that we were just very unlucky with our selection and only experienced the negative side. Seeing their other reviews show that they obviously have merit when it comes to taste, so I hope I was just dealt a bad hand. It is important to mention that when we told the manager about the quality, he did give us half off the soondae's price, which wasn't satisfactory but understandable, but I cannot understand how they could originally charge over $70...
Read moreFor us, Han Korea is one of the best Korean restaurants in Calgary.
After moving to Calgary, after several expeditions to Korean restaurants, we stopped visiting a new one. First, it was too expensive (usually two to three times the price of Korea). Second, the taste was mediocre and not authentic enough (my husband has kept telling me my cooking is far better than some places). Finally, the severs of some places were not kind, also oddly enough as the kindness of the servers increased, the taste went down. So we visit just our few favourites for a while without trying a new one.
But yesterday we came to try here, as we went to the neighbourhood of this place for other things around quite late dinner time and the review of this place was quite good.
Well, our new attempt was a great success. Most of all, the food tasted amazing and authentic. The portion was super generous. If you order one menu per person (it's a rule of here), seven different free side dishes are served with unlimited cooked rice. Also, every side dish was super yummy and fresh. Even they have every proper sauce for each meal! Besides, every staff of here was super kind; it made us feel that they cared us. They even offered free refill of side dishes before our asking.
The only thing to be careful according other reviews is that this restaurant is so popular, so you have to wait a lot at peak time. Our visiting time was over 8 pm; still, the place was full. And the inside space of the restaurant is not so vast (I would rather say that this place is quite small), so if you are a group of more than six, it's better to make a...
Read moreI was almost robbed there today. I ordered $90+ set for to go but later found they packed only the half of my order. My wife gave a call to ask for a partial refund. The lady there said like “I am busy right now, so no. I will give you a call later.” I could not stand this black comedy anymore so gave a call. She was so friendly in the beginning but opened up a salvo, “yeah, one you guys did not pick up..” I was at this point quite mad and reminded her of what she is supposed to do. I mean, I cannot pack up order by myself, can I? Then she grumbled over me being mad and she got furious when I asked for a full refund. Am I supposed to happy to miss my dinner? Eventually she gave me a partial refund, after asking my full credit card info twice cause she fumbled again. Then she hung up with expletives. Don’t be like this lady.
My wife was mad, too and she is urging me give 1 star review, but I am not going to listens to her. The other order I got tastes great…I think you can be cocky if your food is good. While writing this review, at least I am enjoying the rest of food from Han Corea.
Another thing that you should not be like this lady. She lied initially: “partial refund is not allowed ‘cause I need to cancel the entire order and re-order ones that you got.” She could not keep her words for a sec cause I then happily asked her for a full refund. She then went ahead and got me a partial...
