Kam Han Szechuan House — Restaurant in Calgary

For 30 plus years Kam Han was the best Chinese restaurant in the city. Even 3 years ago they were still knocking it out of the park. In the past year, everything has changed.

They were so good for so long, we gave them three chances this past year, thinking that even the best can have off nights.

But after the third chance, the last being Christmas Eve, we won't be back.

I understand that Christmas Eve is probably the busiest evening of the year so we wanted to order early (4:54pm) for delivery. Unsurprisingly, the delivery was set and confirmed for estimated drop off at 6:24pm which we fully expected for such a busy evening.

7:15pm arrived and no delivery. Repeated phone calls resulted in nothing but busy signals, I'm sure they simply disconnected the phone to stop it from continuous ringing due to the busy nature of the evening.

I decided that with no other way to contact them, the only way to check on the status of my delivery was to physically drive to the restaurant.

Upon arrival, the restaurant was full and there were approx. 10 people waiting in line for a pick up (again, not a surprise).

Another ten minutes later I was able to finally speak with someone about the status of my DELIVERY order, in person, at the restaurant, only to be told it had already been delivered. Only it hadn't. They found the order sitting on a tray behind the bar. According to the receipt, the order was filled at 7:30pm. Busy times, mistakes can be made.

The first second and third strikes were also due to an uncharacteristic but consistently poor food quality. What a bummer after so many years of great quality fresh chinesr food. But I suppose every restaurant's run must come to an end. I hope others have a better experience in the future, but for us, we are saying goodbye to Kam Han. There are many other great choices out there, even in the local neighborhood.

Ordered Kam Han for dinner tonight, the food was subpar at best. When I called to place the order, I was informed that the paper menu prices were no longer valid - every dish increased by 1 dollar, and the coupon for free gingerbeef could not be redeemed for less than $75, despite the coupon indicating min order required was $65. I don't know how they can refuse to honor their own coupons but okay, we let that one go. I used to reason that if prices were up, it was necessary in order to maintain quality. However that seems to no longer apply to most establishments these days. Kam Han used to be a favorite of ours; not anymore. 85 minutes and $91.00 later (6 menu items, incl tax, a$6delivery fee + driver tip) to finally sit down to a nice meal of undercooked/raw batter & soggy ginger beef, bland chowmain, leather texture meats and past prime or frozen vegetables likely used in the beef and broccoli and fried rice dishes. The only item we actually enjoyed were the dumplings. And I guess the lemon chicken wasnt terrible; was edible atleast. Certainly none of it was worth $17-$18 / dish, that's forsure. To summarize, what you get time and time again is steadily declining quality for more and more money. Do your self a favor and just buy groceries and cook at...

We have counted on Kam Han for our Chinese food orders and have been happy with everything food and service wise till this Mothers Day. We order from them 4-5 times a year and always on Mothers Day. Part of their offers is you receive a free dish when you go over a certain $ value and they also offer 5% off if you pick up. When completing our order this year I was told that the free dish offer wouldn’t be available because it’s too busy on Mothers Day. This has never happened previously on Mothers Day or any other time we have ordered. After a bit of discussion about this the gal I had on the phone asked her Manager if they could give me this offer and the Manager approved to give us the free dish.I thanked her and then she said but we can’t give you the pick up discount then it is either one or the other! Frustrated with this I said fine because I wasn’t going to go else where at this point.

Our order was 2 times over the free dish promo you wouldn’t think that they would pull this type of stuff on a order like this or a frequent customer.

The food was good and everyone enjoyed but I won’t use them again..
