A Disappointing Dining Experience at Kodantttam Restaurant (Downtown Upten Building)
We recently visited Kodantttam restaurant in the Downtown Upten building and, unfortunately, had a very disappointing experience. From the moment we arrived, the service and food quality fell far below expectations.
To begin with, we were told that a reservation was required, despite the restaurant being mostly empty. This gave a confusing first impression. Once seated, we discovered that nearly half of the menu items were unavailable. After placing our order, we were informed—after a 10-minute wait—that the items we chose were not available, and we were instead asked to select from what little was left. This kind of communication is unacceptable, especially in a restaurant that promotes itself as a premium dining experience.
When the food finally arrived, it was neither fresh nor hot. There was no attention to quality or quantity, and the dishes did not meet even basic standards. Considering the high prices compared to other Indian restaurants in Calgary, this was extremely disappointing. The value for money was simply not there.
We work hard and spend our after-tax earnings on dining experiences that we hope will be enjoyable. Unfortunately, this visit felt like a complete waste—not just of money, but of time and anticipation. It truly ruined our day.
We hope the management takes this feedback seriously. A little more effort toward customer satisfaction, food quality, and honest communication could go a long way in improving your...
Read moreStepping into Kondattam Indian Kitchen and Bar was like being instantly transported to the heart of India. From the moment we walked in, the aromatic spices and warm, inviting atmosphere set the stage for an unforgettable meal. We started with the Paneer Tikka sizzler and it was absolutely divine – perfectly marinated, succulent, and with just the right amount of char. For our main courses, we indulged in the Butter Chicken and the Lamb shank nihari, both of which were exemplary. The Butter Chicken was creamy, rich, and bursting with flavor, easily one of the best I've ever had. The Lamb was tender, falling apart with every bite, and the gravy was a complex symphony of spices. We paired these with some fluffy Garlic Naan and paired with indian wine , which were perfect for soaking up every last drop of the delicious curries. The service was equally impressive.our server was attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, and incredibly friendly, making excellent recommendations that enhanced our dining experience. The pacing of the meal was just right, allowing us to savour each dish. The restaurant itself was spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated, adding to the overall pleasant ambiance Kondattam is a true gem. If you're looking for an authentic, flavourful, and thoroughly enjoyable Indian dining experience, look no further. We left feeling completely satisfied and already planning our next visit. Highly, highly...
Read moreA 5 star service has a potential to elevate a 4 star meal. That’s exactly how I felt at Kondattam. A newly opened South Indian restaurant in Calgary, whose focus is not just good food but also a welcoming service.
We ordered two dosas, 1 lemon chilli refresher and a filter coffee. The presentation was perfect. My Sambhar felt cold and they replaced it with piping hot one (just the way I liked it) right away. The chef came to us, asking us if everything was good and did that with every table, which I always appreciate. The filter coffee was served exactly how it should (picture attached for reference) and was delicious.
Our server: Zoe, was polite and gave us a fantastic service. Not too pushy and ready to answer our questions.
As the restaurant is new, I felt that the dishes need some fine tuning, eg: the podi on dosa felt a little less, the Sambhar quantity felt smaller than what a dosa eating person might expect, bringing sugar with the filter coffee etc. I also felt, for a South Indian, specifically Andhra, focused restaurant, it had fewer Sothern Indian dishes on the menu(which includes authentic veg and non veg curries, biriyanis, rice which are not usually available in regular South Indian restaurants) and had many North Indian dishes. The chef did mention that he is planning to expand the menu. So I am hopeful.
Overall, a wonderful first...
