This is the first time I’ve seen a play in three years . The last time was The Christmas Carol in Banff on Xmas day . I specially picked Xmas Eve to continue the tradition and booked two months ahead . FYI the $40 under 40 only covers the P2 and P3 seats in the orchestra area and NOT other levels . This is fine with me as you can see better if you sit closer . My friends and I chose row F which was good . Book early so you can get a seat in the centre . The sets were amazing like one of those expensive immersive galleries that people pay $$ to see . I’ve read someone’s critical views of this storyline and although I agree with some of what she said , I’m not harshly critical . This play although the plot has changed there was plenty of LOL moments that had the whole audience roaring . The movie in contrast sticks to the original storyline but there is very little humour. The only reason I liked the movie was because in my spare time I’m also a writer so I can relate to Jo. I’m just looking for a good Christmas story and not any particular plot. It’s good that this play has no scary scenes . The reaper in the Christmas Carol is the reason I can’t rewatch that story in ANY form , even the Disney Plus ones. I am however going to warn people who are scared of blood and needles , that there is a scene where Jo intentionally touches a rose plant and gets pricked . Otherwise there...
Read moreI went to the production of "The Importance of Being Earnest." I have done many amateur theatre productions and professional productions and I only want to see good productions at this point in my life. I am now retired (IATSE) and my companion (also IATSE) and I felt is would be a nice afternoon to see this show. I have never seen or worked on this particular show before so was looking forward to seeing it.
Wow! Fabulous. The cast was well suited to the various roles and the set and set dec. was very nice. The lighting did the show justice (I was a lighting, sound and set construction tech). The costumes reminded me of the days gone by when the audience would dress up to go to the theatre. And my companion (props designer) and I both loved Algernone's hair style.
The whole show worked really well and I will complement the director for putting together the overall show so it worked so well. The script - well, it was typical of the genre but the director pushed some limits and it worked; melodramatic to the right degree...comical and it was just a delightful afternoon of theatre.
This show rates a full 5 stars and that is...
Read moreI went for my first Theatre Calgary show (A Christmas Carol - 2023) because I was curious about exploring more local shows and events.
In short, it was a fantastic time that exceeded my expectations and for $72, I enjoyed myself thoroughly. In a world of streaming, movies, and shows - live theatre offers a very unique and intimate experience that you don't get elsewhere.
At first, I was hesitant to spend $70+ to see a live theatre performance. I was under the stigma that it would feel very "high school play" with mediocre acting, stage effects, etc.
Although you won't get "Vegas-level" performances, everything from acting quality, seating, lobby & environment, stage effects, presentation, ticket management, and all else, I was pleasantly surprised.
I plan on attending shows somewhat more frequently, especially if there is a show that I recognize.
Whether you are going out for a date, family night, or solo venture to change things up a bit, I definitely recommend at least giving this a shot.
Great work, Theatre Calgary team! I could tell just how passionate all your actors were about the production, and I hope you continue to...
