I'm writing this review specifically about the Opera room and I'm hoping to provide some constructive criticism here. I've attended two events in the Opera room and three in the main dining area and in my opinion, the Teatro experience is not consistent across both spaces.
We booked a Christmas party in the Opera room this year with a 4 course dinner and drink service. During booking, the members of staff were fantastic and very accommodating. They understood our budget and helped us make a suitable plan.
Upon arrival, the space was beautiful. The issues began with the pre-dinner cocktails. We had arranged for people to be able to have any classic cocktail, mocktail, high-balls under $12, beer, or a glass of wine. There was no menu or sign detailing the 7 classic cocktails that were on the menu we were provided prior to booking, so people were left to guess what they wanted. There was also no sign for the mocktail options and the staff seemed somewhat uninterested in explaining the options. Bottles were tucked away under the counter and it was clear they were just trying to push people towards the easier to manage beer and wine service. There were no cocktail garnishes and no large ice cubes for the cocktails that I know are used routinely in the main room.
Staff was great with timing on food service and worked with our contact to decide when it would be best to seat people.
The first course of butternut squash soup was quite nice. The second course was the ahi tuna crudo. The menu said this would be served with olive, Calabrian chili, lemon, and arugula. It did not have the arugula and it had a dollop of chili mayo/aioli instead of actual Calabrian chili. I didn't hear anyone raving about this dish. We had a choice of beef short rib or roasted chicken for the main and I had the short rib which was delicious. The dessert was a chocolate mousse cake which was good but not something I'll be thinking back to or craving in the future.
Overall, in comparison to the experience I've had in the main room in the past, the Opera room doesn't hit that same mark, and in my opinion, it cheapens the Teatro name. I think with some small improvements, it could really be a...
Read moreGood service and extensive wine list, but very questionable food for the price point. I rarely leave reviews at all, let alone negative ones, but unfortunately my experience at Teatro left me feeling quite disappointed.
I dined here recently with my partner for her birthday. While the service was fine as mentioned, I felt the food was vastly overpriced for the quality received. We had ordered the Wagyu Striploin, the Lasagna, the Fried Brussels Sprouts, and opted for the Tiramisu and Pumpkin Cheesecake for dessert.
I loathe to be so negative, but the lasagna was downright terrible. It had a very "wet" characteristic to it, and honestly tasted akin to a microwave dinner, or someone pouring canned supermarket tomato sauce and cheese onto a chunk of rubbery lobster. We did not finish this dish.
Although we had ordered our steak medium rare, it was served slightly cold, and was not of the quality you would typically expect for Wagyu beef. The fingerling potatoes served with the steak seemed undercooked, while the accompanying oyster mushrooms tasted like nothing but overpowering balsamic vinegar. Not great for an $80 dish.
The brussels sprouts were the best tasting out of all 3 dishes, but I have had much better fried brussels sprouts elsewhere.
The desserts were good, but nothing extraordinary. We did really appreciate the gesture of a small "Happy Birthday" chocolate for my partner however.
I should clarify that I have absolutely no problem paying prices like these, but the quality of the food should reflect that value. Having been to many restaurants of a similar price point in Calgary and across the country, I was expecting much better. Sadly, Teatro fell quite short on that for us, and I can't say that we will return. If you're on the fence, skip this one. You will have much better food at Ten Foot or even a Concord Group restaurant, and will...
Read moreMy husband and I ate here for our anniversary while we were in Calgary, and I must say I was extremely unimpressed with the experience.
I ordered the pork belly and my husband ordered the braised duck, when my meal arrived, I was extremely disappointed to find that the pork was so tough that it was inedible. The dish was so tough, that I couldn't even cut it using the high end steak knife that was provided.
For obvious reasons I had to send the dish back and ordered the duck instead. The house was kind enough to provide me with a complimentary salad(which was sub par at best), but I was shocked by the fact that for the first time in my life, the manager did not come to our table to speak with us after the dish was sent back. I expected a much higher level of customer service from a restaurant with their reputation.
Not only that, it was also the first time in my life, that a restaurant did not offer to comp the meal after having a main course sent back. I also had the lovely experience of having to spend the remainder of my meal, with the chef giving me dirty looks from their open kitchen.
In the end the duck was delicious(though the accompanying sides were not), and our server was excellent. Though sadly I cannot give praise of any kind, to any other member of their staff.
I will never return to this restaurant, and I was frankly appalled by the shocking lack of service, and the outright disrespectful manner of their kitchen staff. Not to mention the utter incompetence of the management, for their failure to perform one of the most basic tenants of their job description.
I think perhaps they should be informed, that an impressive wine list does not a high end...
