I lived above this restaurant during the pandemic. I chose this location because it was close to the grocery store. I passed this restaurant everyday, and every night.
I am a fan of Indian cuisine. Growing up my best friends where Hindus & Sikhs. One of our favourite activities when we grew older was looking for the best Indian cuisine that reflects a certain dish, speciality or regional delicacy. We each had our favourite.
My favourite is: “Fish Pakora”. I usually go to a desi deli in Falcon Ridge to get this meal freshly made for me.
Mirchi Restaurant has to have the best Fish Pakora I have ever eaten and it’s somehow fresher than a deli. Honestly I am afraid to try any of there other dishes out of fear I will realize I’ve missed out in the best Indian Cuisine in Calgary… their naan might be better than a bakers… and fresher!
When people think of Indian Food they normally associate it with: “Butter Chicken” & white rice. Rather than the traditional dish of: “Chicken Biryani”. My only regret was I missed out on the opportunity to eat here sooner. During the start of the pandemic I went in to order: “Butter Chicken” and was surprised it haven’t been made into a platter or dish including white rice. After they explained I would have to order separately. I did, and paid; at first I thought the price was expensive… until my order was ready and there was literally enough food for six people. There was so much food that I felt bad it was so cheap. Than I felt bad because there was a group of six people who probably wouldn’t eat that day. So I decided to donate my massively oversized meal to people who deserved to have a perfect meal. Yes, I am saying that I feel bad because the way the food looked, smelled and had those individuals smacking there lips and saying it was so good. I just thought they were saying that… but that’s when I should have know the food was elite. I actually feel like I should have eaten all that food that day and never donated it because if I did then I wouldn’t have been so oblivious to such an amazing restaurant.
I never knew you could get get such good food, variety and quality in just one restaurant.
The second time I should have known the food was top tier. When I met the chef back when I use to live around there. I had a great intellectual conversation with him and I still remember when he said: “You should come eat here I’ll make you something you’ll like, what do you like? Trust me you’ll love it”. He was right. I look forward to...
Read moreAte their food tonight. The food itself was good but the female waitstaff was incredibly rude.
When we first ordered and were trying to pay, she said we could pay after eating. At around 9.10 we requested to-go boxes (which obviously precedes paying and departing from a restaurant). We were just about to stand up to pay and leave when the lady abruptly goes "can you just pay me so I can go?"
Now, I get it. Restaurants have to close out their cash register at night before closing. The fact of paying is not the issue. The issue is the bluntness and rudeness of wording it that way. In any decent restaurant, a waitress would've come over to the table and said, "how'd you like the food? Good? Great, just so you know we will be closing shortly so we just need to clean up and wrap things up". Something worded like this drives the message home that they need to close so please pay and we can all go home. That I would have been fine with. Bluntly telling people to "pay me", as if youre our landlord or something, is impolite.
I got up and paid, tip and all. After paying, I politely and with a smile told the server that she could have gotten the same message across but with polite wording. Instead of owning up to the mistake, she doubled down, got really defensive and rude, without realizing how rude she was being.
After getting really annoyed I reminded her that my colleague and I dont have to eat at their restaurant and won't ever again if she behaves this way, yet she was adamant and became ruder.
We got frustrated and left. We are both new to Calgary and have other young professional colleagues who have recently moved into the city so rest assured, none of us will ever come to this...
Read moreI’m not sure where to begin. After waiting a few minutes a man comes to the desk stands in front of my date and I and deliberate about what to have, he offers us a menu almost like it was a last resort. After taking his advice for how much to order and eat, I realized there was no rice. He informs me the only way to get rice with our meal is to order another dish ($16 value) which I declined, because in the past in coming here it was available. As our first dish arrives, he neglects to give us cutlery so we’re left sitting there for a few minutes as he disappears into the back. I manage to grab his attention and ask for some, which he promptly forgets so he can do other things. So for a span of 5-6 minutes we’re just left staring at our food. I get his attention again and he brings some spoons and we finally commence with eating our first dish, which tasted great, then our next dish arrives and it’s not our order, and he knows this and he offers to give it to us at the same price because it’s worth more than our original order. We decline and ask for the dish we had ordered and it arrives after some time, it is comparatively speaking much smaller than the incorrect dish that was brought out. 12 pieces of 1cm cubed chicken inside a soup of sauce for butter chicken with no rice.I go to the till to pay and he tries charging me for the dish I didn’t order offering to give me cash back to cover the difference. To top it all off the naan was rock hard. It was more...
