As a couple from Ottawa, we ventured to Calgary for a little two-day getaway, before heading off to Vancouver. I was in the mood for pizza, and thought the pictures taken of Noble Pie's pizzas looked mouth-watering, so we naturally had to try it out. On our first day, my partner and I ordered the "Original" pizza for takeaway, which was an 18" pizza, topped with fresh basil, various cheeses, and some garlicky goodness. This pizza was mindblowing. No topping overpowered the other, they were in perfect harmony with one another. The garlicky undertone was sublime, and the fresh basil was a beautiful bowtie to the perfectly-crispy pizza. The crust was honestly my favourite part of the pizza. We ordered it well-done, and the undercarriage of the pizza and the crust were perfectly done to our liking. 10/10 pizza, and the best thin-crust pizza we've tried in Canada.
Since the first pizza was so good, we were compelled to dine-in the next day, to try out the other pizzas. We walked into the establishment nearing 5:00 PM without a reservation, and the place was packed. However, we were able to snag a table for two. Our server was a very charismatic, polite, and pleasant, red-headed/cherry-blonde gentleman. He made our experience even better! We ordered the half "Roni" and half "Extra Fancy" pizza. Essentially, half of the pizza was pepperoni and cheese, and the other half had various toppings, such as: pepperoni, cheese, jalapeños, onions, mushrooms, oregano, etc. We also ordered the house-made garlic dipping sauce, and a locally-brewed cherry and tangerine sour beer. The beer paired very nicely with the pizza, and the garlic sauce had a nice and deep flavour.
The pizzas were both delicious. The "Roni" side of the pizza was slightly spicy, and the pepperonis were small and cute. However, my favourite out of the two pizzas was the extra fancy, since it had good-quality ingredients, and the jalapeños surprisingly worked in the pizza.
Though, the star of the show out of the three pizzas we had was hands-down the "Original" pizza. We will be dreaming about that one for a while!
Overall, 10/10 pizzas, and 10/10 dining experience thanks to our charismatic waiter. Will definitely return when...
Read moreSuperlative pizza. A nostalgic, blissful pizza experience like a breath of fresh air for the first time in far too long. Unequivocally the best pizza in Calgary, and perhaps the country.
Noble Pie offers an experience leaps and bounds above that offered by it’s competition. (There simply is no competition) The New York style pies are offered each day in three varieties and potentially a fourth depending on when you go and there is an excellent drink menu as well, offering beverages of the highest quality as well. “The Roni” is my favourite pie I’ve had so far, but all of them are wonderful. Mike’s Hot Honey, used on some of the pies, is an incredible addition to their pies, and you can even purchase a bottle to take home
Noble Pie is tucked away in the mezzanine of 88 Brewing Co., in 2600 Portland Street. The interior is decorated with nostalgic late eighties items, (such as multiple running CRT TV monitors) and has the classic appearance of a pizzeria. One side of the mezzanine overlooks the (immaculate) main brewery area, and on the other windows have a few of the surrounding somewhat industrial area.
My experience at Noble Pie had all the positive aspects of my pizza experiences as a young student rushing back, on top of the best pizza I’ve ever had. My partner Alexa brought me along with her recently (she goes every Sunday), and since then I have gone with her every week I can as well. The staff at Noble Pie are wonderful, and offer service of the highest quality.
I believe the negative reviews should be disregarded by anyone reading these. Anything of such high quality will always have a limited supply, and a high demand. Arrive early (before the dough runs out) and you will not be disappointed. People are usually beginning to fill parking spots, waiting for the doors to open about fifteen to thirty minutes before Noble Pie opens, so get there early! It takes a while to have each pizza made to such a high standard - but it is worth the wait, no...
Read moreIt takes guts, to open a restaurant with the main entrance facing a back lane.
Noble Pie has a bit of an underground, insiders-in-the-know-only attitude, evoking a scene from Blade Runner, with its back-lane entrance, purposely, carefully aged, dimly lit darkened walls, diner style retro signs, tiffany lamps and minimalist industrial decor.
The menu is simple, promising, the place is humming on a Saturday at an early 5:30 PM.
We ordered a big pizza, half Roni and half Sweet Cheesus.
With cheese and a copious amount of honey, the Sweet Cheesus half bore its name well. I should have read the small print, it was a bit sweet for me.
The Roni was appropriately covered with slices of small diameter pepperoni, very salty.
The edge of the crust was puffy and delicious but the center was a bit chewy. This type of pizza is best eaten fresh and hot.
We requested utensils, which were promptly delivered, but the knives were dull and not very effective for the purpose of cutting into the crust.
On the bright side, one big pizza provided a comfortable meal. We (the two of us) were not hungry after eating it. On the less good side, between the sweet and the salty, I needed to drink a lot of water after that meal.
The techno house music rounded up the atmosphere well and was initially un-obstructive. It was progressively cranked up until it was a bit much.
This is a fun, unusual place to visit. I can see it being a place that will make out-of-town guests feel like they had a unique experience.
I have to admit however, my appetite for loud, salty and sweet all at the same time has dwindled over the years. I may wait a while before my next visit to Noble Pie.
Keep in mind, this one opinion. The restaurant was full for the duration of our meal. There was a line at the door to get in when we left. This is a...
