Bought the kids here for dinner and a treat and didn't regret it. The establishment is medium sized, mostly with tables for 4-6. It's got a nice modern, casual vibe with an overall darker ambience.
Mostly known as a dessert cafe, Sugar Marmalade also features a pretty robust food and drink menu as well, ranging from Asian inspired street food, rice dishes, curries, fried chicken and noodle soups. We had the chance to order the Taiwanese beef fries, Kimchi popcorn chicken, Japanese pork curry rice, Eel rice, Taiwanese beef noodle soup and Baked curry rice.
Each dish was well presented, prepared well and full of flavour. Especially well done were the fried items like the popcorn chicken and pork cutlets in some of the dishes. Not over done and moist, unlike most places that offer this type of food. Portions were also good for a hungry individual, although sharing between a pair would be almost perfect.
The drinks were also well done and tasty. All the bubble teas and carbonated sodas were not overly sweet. And they didn't skimp on the drinks that featured fruit, filling each cup with a good portion of freshly cut items.
The desserts here are very well done. We ordered a bubble waffle, boba bingsu, mango bingsu, and a mango pudding. The bubble waffle was beautifully presented, accurate to the menu photo. Springy and sweet topped with fresh strawberries and cream. The mango pudding was also huge, topped with evaporated milk, was soft and not dense. The bingsu (Korean shaved ice) were amazing. Generous portions of fruit toppings, jelly and boba accompanied the perfectly sweetened shaved milk ice. A perfect finish to a fun dinner.
The restaurant itself is clean, and the staff is attentive. The food also came out at a good pace, even with how busy the place was when we went. The only knock is the facilities, could of used a bit more attention. There is plenty of street parking, although you will need to pay attention to the posted signs as some parts of nearby streets are for permit holders.

Read moreA 2.5 - 3 rating. The overall look, and dark aesthetics is meant to be more of a night chilling spotm with ample amount of seating. I'm sure the desserts are the things to really go for here. Came here for a dinner meal with some drinks - was not too impressed. My rating is not based on any dessert experience but on everything else.
The menu - extensive! Something for everyone even the traditionalists.
The service was good and friendly - no issues and quite enjoyed the service here!
The food/meals were very mediocre though. Frozen vegetables that still had tastes of frozen veggies. The HK style rice noodles were not so great but I suppose hits the spot. It was drowning in truly salty/dark soy sauce at the bottom without the proper balance of peanut butter sauce and hoisin sauce. The rolls felt reheated in a microwave and stuck together as one a lot. The mini one person hot pot is very gimmicky - careful bc that paper bowl can burn/light in flames. The service to help us out with changing out the bowls and more broth was very good. But the overall single hot pot in a small bowl was very hard to cook and eat properly. The curry for the cutlet was chunky and probably wasn't heated up properly for it to unclump into a more liquid curry style.
The drinks - for the milk grass jelly, the grass jelly was too thick and not soft (direct from can style) which made it hard to drink from the straw. There weren't options on sweetness in drinks - so they were on a standard too sweet for my liking (including a mango...
Read moreVisiting from Toronto so I know sugar marmalade. My friend and I went there at 9:45pm and placed our order shortly before 10pm. By 10:30pm none of our food has come out.
We approached a waitress and asked if our order has been placed. She then says she will ask our server to see if it has. She comes back saying it did.
Food starts coming for my friend and the order tickets were placed on our table. The waitress lied. The time stamp for the waitress sending in the order was after I asked her if it was placed. They only placed it when I asked.
Once my food came (chicken cutlet curry) I started to eat. I started at the end of the cutlet working my way towards the middle of the meat.
I start to notice that the meat was a bit pink. Not so much that I thought hey some chicken has a hint of pink after it’s been cooked.
I decided to just open the middle part of the chicken exposing raw meat. -_-
I called the waitress and showed her. I told her I don’t want to wait for another one and I’m not paying for it either.
I figured they rushed it because they were already cleaning up and ready to close at 11pm
Slow customer service and food was not cooked. Thumbs down for the...
