We had an uncomfortable experience during our visit to Captain’s Boil in Calgary. A new Korean male server was being trained by a female trainer who continuously criticized him in front of customers. At one point, the food he was carrying was so hot that his hand turned red — it looked painful, and we were genuinely concerned. Despite this, the trainer continued to scold him, which delayed service and created a tense atmosphere. Later, the male server accidentally dropped food on our table. He looked extremely flustered and distressed. The female trainer whispered something to him, and we expected she would take appropriate action — but instead, she disappeared into the kitchen and never returned to any customer-facing areas. We didn’t eat the dropped food. We spoke to the manager, who apologized and said they would make it up to us next time. Unfortunately, it was our last day in Calgary, so we had to leave without any real resolution. What disappointed us most was that, despite being told by the manager to apologize, the female trainer never came to us. We later heard from someone else that she had asked the manager to pass on the apology instead. Her choice to avoid taking responsibility and face the situation was very unprofessional. The new male server seemed to be doing his best under difficult circumstances and was not at fault. Unfortunately, the overall handling by the trainer and management left a very negative impression on what was supposed to be our final enjoyable day in Calgary.

Horrified with my experience tonight. I have been to this place so many times, and never have I ever felt so disrespected before. Everything was fine, i was nice and being friendly but then it hit me that something's off. Staff's not quick to attend to customers or even checks on them (like i mentioned i've been to this place before, it was not like this). Yes they are quick to get you seated. And a little slow to take your order. But what frustrated me is the amount of time that our food took before it was served. I realized that it took so much time for us when we had a table beside us and they got their orders within 10min. And what frustrated me is I had to ask for my order if its ready as i have mentioned, the table beside us got the food first. Second, we feel like we're being outcast/ignored for a reason. The table beside us got asked if they're doing ok. And the rest of the tables in the restaurant. But we were never checked like that. Plus, it is so hard to get the staffs attention when you need something. And third, why are they on their phone that customers can see they are on their phone? (I have picture attached to show) Except that one girl with black long hair in a pony, wearing glasses. Also, just want to compliment that girl with long black hair in a pont, wearing glasses that she was nice and hardworking. I can see her moving around a lot. Checking on customers. But overall food was good, serving of the rice looks a little less plus less seafood in it.

"October 23, 2024 I recently dined at Captain Boyle with someone close, and while the small table and hot food served in plastic bags were a bit surprising, the overall experience was fantastic! The food was fresh and delicious, but the highlight of our visit was the exceptional customer service. Angie, in particular, went above and beyond to make sure we had a wonderful time. Her warm smile and attentive service made us feel welcome right from the start. She even noticed I was avoiding certain food items and kindly asked if it was due to religious reasons, showing a level of respect and care for her customers’ values that’s truly rare. I highly recommend Captain Boyle not only for the tasty food but also for the wonderful hospitality. Thank you, Angie, for making our meal so enjoyable! *Please note:* The review below reflects my previous experience which was 2 years ago, I feel it’s important to share a concern I learned about afterward. I was disappointed to discover that Captain Boyle cooks seafood alongside chicken, beef, and pork in the same containers, according to AHS. While I appreciate that they respect and accommodate concerns if shared, this could be an issue for those looking for food not cross-contaminated with meat products. I hope they consider a setup where seafood can be cooked separately to better serve those who avoid certain foods for dietary or religious reasons, as there is a significant population in Calgary that values such options.

I am beyond disappointed and disgusted by this location. Let’s take a look at the reasons why.

  1. I dined here yesterday, and after about 30 mins I began experiencing the worst stomach ache ever. I thought it was just indigestion or something… but it’s been over 17 hours (I couldn’t sleep from the pain) and I still have the same amount of stomach pain along with vomitting. I just really don’t feel good and hope that this feeling will go away soon. I also hope that this pain is not due to unsanitary handling of the food.

  2. After reading some of the reviews to try and find a similar experience to mine (mentioned above)… I found out that they cross contaminate their food with chicken, beef, and pork. That is absolutely disgusting for someone that has specific dietary requirements. What sucks even more is that I wasn’t notified of this by any of the servers. They did ask if I had any allergies without further explanation, but sorry to burst your bubble, allergies and specific dietary requirements are NOT the same thing. I am beyond disgusted and feel extremely disrespected + unaccounted for. I expected seafood to be explicitly seafood… but I guess not here. R E V O L T I N G.

  3. The food is quite overpriced for the quality and quantity.

  4. The shrimp wasn’t cleaned out (deveined) which extremely grossed me out. Some of the mussels were empty with the shell left behind. There was barely any sauce in the plastic bags which meant bland food. The food quality is just not up to par with other seafood places at all.

  5. The servers were so rude and unwelcoming, and for the life of me I couldn’t understand why. I’m an extremely accomodating person, but despite my friendly attitude… they continued to be unattentive + unaccomodating! We asked one of the servers if the captain’s boil sauce could be added on to the vegetable sides…. He literally replied with “NO.” Umm why not? He then changed his mind and mentioned that it would cost an extra $3.00 to add the sauce…. Lol what? You gotta be kidding me.

Whenever I visit the South Common location in Edmonton, the sides ALWAYS and automatically come inside a bag drenched in sauce without paying a single cent for it. But it’s my bad for expecting the same service & quality at this location.

  1. The seating arrangement is uncomfortable. It is soooo crowded, there’s barely any privacy or room between each table.

  2. The cup of water also had a horrible rancid smell. For a person that’s sensitive to foul scents… it was quite appetite suppressing.

I do NOT recommend this place to anyone at all. I would’ve given zero stars if I could, because that one star is too much for the...

BE WARNED: I am giving it 2 stars as I thought the food itself was tasty and the manager was very friendly... however those were the only 2 positive things from our experience. No one came to ask if this was our first time there nor explained the concept, we had to get up from our table to view the price list set up on a different table, they took a very long time to come take our order and the server didn't ask if we wanted drinks...We had a table of 6 and ordered almost one of each options from the menu. We had no idea that everything would be served in a bag the way you would get a lb of raw food at a wet market (presentation leaves a lot of room for improvement). Perhaps serve the bags inside a bowl. The taste itself was good but some of it is what you call "fresh frozen" meaning it's cooked from frozen...very disappointed and mainly due to the high price for the lack of freshness and quality. We were given only 3 scissors for the 6 of us, the cutlery was plastic along with the bowls we were given so we could share were Styrofoam...lots of plastic involved...very counterintuitive given that oceans are being threatened by plastic. One member of our party ordered corn as a side...this thing was the quarter part of a small corn. When the manager asked how everything was, we told him we were disappointed with the corn and he proceeded to explain that they were out of season and that this was all he could find at Costco. I figure a place like this would get their supply from Sysco or Gordon foods supplier and not Costco... regardless if that's the case and corn is not in season, perhaps don't offer it on the menu until it is. The last nail in the coffin was the 15% gratuity imposed on our bill. This you expect from a higher end restaurant and not a place that serves meals in a bag and uses plastic containers and cutlery. We all felt the service did not earn a 15% tip as it was far from exceptional. While reading other less than favorable reviews I noticed the answer from the owner is the same and only offers a bland resolution. I personally don't need a resolution as neither of the 6 people from our party will not be going back to the Captain's Boil, but if there is a resolution to be given, I hope the owners would place emphasis on the service and real market price of non seafood items, as well as implement changes to reduce all the waste to actually meet the high price with an authentic...

This place is aweful. I'm so mad I wasted my money on this this. My friend as me if I wanted some seafood, I was so excited to try a captain boils. Since it my first time here, I agreed to come as we walked in the mail server asked if we had any allergies which we said no than we were seated. The atmosphere wasn't that bad, within 1 minute a lady server came to take our order, we haven't even looked at the menus, we asked for more time and water. She came back with minutes with the water and ask again in a very inpatient, rude matter. We did not like her. We were still looking at the menu as everything said " market price" but there was no prices. I asked her to give us more time again, she offer no suggestions or recommendations other than the specialthey had which was on the napkins dispenser. She than then cane back the 3rd time within 5 minutes. She was not friendly and you could tell she was faking it. I had to ask her the prices for the captain boils, since we werent so hungry, we didnt want to order so much food. We got the Matey’s seafood feast with clams and shrimp. It was supposed to come with two regular sides which we chose boil egg and corn. It only came with 1 measly piece of tatseless corn that was mush and 1 egg. For the premium we git the sausage, this came with a shrimp basket and fries. The clams abd the shrimp were just heat up, you could tell it was not fresh, it was COVERED in parpkira like the WHOLE sauce was just PARKIRA and oil, not seasoning on any of the food snd you can heavily taset MSG. ALL THE FOOD WAS COVERED IN MSG. It was aweful. The fried rich came and was soooo dry and hard. It was the worst fried rice i every taste, we have to get a to go for it abd the fries and shrimp basket. The clams was half empty shells, which is a rip off, why have us pay such a huge amount for empty shells?? I found the poop was still left on the shrimp, which is very VERY disgusting. It was very disappointing for a seafood boil, it tasted so bad. It was also a very awkward and unpleasant dining experience coming here and I don’t intend on coming back here. If this could get 0 stars I'll give it that. The server, the food everything was a waste of...
