I had the pleasure of waiting by the till for awhile as they were taking a break from new orders to finish making orders for the people ahead. We came during weekend lunch rush.
Curious about how they made the food, I learned a lot and was very off put. It was so bad that my husband noticed the same things I did, even though we didn’t talk about it until later. This place was SO unsanitary. We both didn’t want to eat the food and expected food poisoning but didn’t want to leave after waiting so long… Anyways, the bald guy picked raw bacon out of the tub with his bare hands. Then he picked up the toasted buns to put on the counter to assemble. He then opened the fridge, grabbed tomato slices and placed those in the burger with the same uncleaned bare hands. Then he picked up the raw beef balls to put on the grill…. Literally he touched everything with his bare unwashed hands, including things you eat right away. He eventually wiped his hands on a towel, then used the same towel to wipe the spatula and tongs. Then dipped the tongs and towel into the same bucket of water by the grill……….. soooo nasty.
The food itself was mediocre. The burger was very average. Class clown and Clive burger are better in terms of flavour and what you get for the price. The fries were cooked in old oil and the texture was bad. The inside was not fluffy. It tasted just cooked in burnt oil, then truffle flavour on top.
Overall this was not worth the $20+ or experience at all. They need to be shut down by...
Read moreWe've been on the hunt for really great burgers in Calgary and we're really excited to try this place located in Avenida Food Hall. Due to the high price at $22, we decided to split the Classic Burger, but added a side order of the much-hyped "triple cooked fries".
The burger was tiny; about the size of an A&W Buddy Burger. The meat patty lacked seasoning and was completely overtaken by the "cheese skirt" and "secret sauce" which were nothing more than crispy fried cheese slice and a mixture of mayo and ketchup respectively.
The portion size of the side order of fries was a bit dubious, especially given it cost $9. They were crispy on the outside, and fleshy on the inside, but again lacked sufficient seasoning and the truffle ketchup seemed like it was just a touch of truffle oil...
Read moreI've been eating here before Joel started up The J Spot and what a change. He's added some incredible, creative, appealing, and delicious choices. I've never had an item on the menu I've disliked. The burgers are absolutely delicious and unique compared to other burgers here.
My personal favorites are the Mochiko Sandwhich, The J Spot burger and the Korean Frier Chicken Tacos. Joel puts a lot of care into what he delivers, he's always busy and there's a reason for it. My top item and what I recommend the most is the Eggs Bennies. I wasn't a fan of egg bennies till I tried his and it's out of this world. I've showed my friends this and they come weekly just for the eggs bennies.
I've eaten at most of the restaurants at Avenida and his by far is my number 1...
