We just came back Thomsons for Valentine's day. We used to really enjoy this restaurant and have enjoyed the Sunday brunch there - one of our favourites in all Alberta! I've been to corporate events there and had really positive experiences. We thought it would great for Valentine's. The entertainment was enjoyable. The drinks and appetizers were decent(pork belly and then some baked vegetables) my wife ordered the salmon and it was ok. I ordered the sirloin steak and it was easily one of the worst steaks I've had in this province. It was cooked to medium rare but the steak was extremely tough. It came on a slice of toast with some fries. I've had a better steak sandwich at a Husky truck stop for $13. We ordered the apple mouse dessert and was pleasantly surprised by the excellent presentation and excellent flavor. Really the only reason why the review is for 2 stars and not just one. Even worse was that no management came to the table to apologize for the experience or make any kind of amends. As such there were no gestures for the terrible main course. A small 10% discount, a complimentary dessert, any kind of gesture to indicate that they were interested in having us come back and come back for a more positive experience. NOT. A. SINGLE. THING.
Read all of my other reviews they are almost all 4 and 5 star reviews. I am an enthusiastic, positive person and enjoy 99% of the places I go to. It saddens me to write this review because we have enjoyed Thomsons. It saddens me that the other half of the restaurant is closed down. I now understand why. This is not a restaurant you go to because you enjoy it. You go to this restaurant because it is convenient and serves food for the purpose of nourishment or sustenance and nothing more. We chose this restaurant wanting to enjoy it. We really did. We have good history. ...
Read moreWe have never been treated so shabbily as by the reception and wait service received ever. We made reservations online for 6PM April 03, 2022. We found the restaurant after great difficulty and around the block due to very inadequate signage as to how to even find an entrance to this restaurant that wasn't locked. Being from out of the area, we did not know that this restaurant had any affiliation to downtown Hyatt/Regency. We just recently purchased an apartment in downtown Calgary and wanted to explore the restaurant scene. We were looking for a street entrance to the restaurant. When we did finally find the secret door (accessed through the lobby of Hyatt, (as all street accesses to the restaurant were locked), and approached to be seated, we were told most 'Toffee Nosed" that people just know where the access to Thomsons is".... We expressed at that point that we were unfamiliar & looking for a nice meal. This comment however did nothing to change his demeanor towards us. Once seated, we were brought menus, and water by the same (I really prefer not to call him a gentleman), male waiter. we asked for a few moments. At which time we were so blatantly ignored for 20 minutes. The restaurant was not busy. When we finally got his attention it was to ask him to supply us with a wine list. This was supplied with distain. At that point, we left. So I cannot comment on the food, but the service from this particular person was absolutely horrid. We did however have a lovely dinner and a very positive experience across the street at "Milestones" and the "Bank & Baron" the night previous. Would highly recommend that a sign be posted on lobby doors of the Hyatt to indicate that it was the only way to access Thompsons, and really recommend that this incident be brought forward to...
Read moreWe were looking for a nice place to have brunch on Sunday and came across Thomson's. We arrived shortly after they opened and waited a while till finally someone came to greet and seat us. Before we settled, we first took a look at the buffet since we had bad experiences before. It looked absolutely awesome and smelled delicious. So, we decided to stay. Unfortunately, this is where the positive experience ended. Our server, though sweet and friendly, was as unattentive as they come. Never looked in our direction or made eye contact. Only really came to the table once at the beginning to take our eggs Benny order. We even had to ask, what I guess was the supervisor who also was mainly just chatting with the servers and standing around, for our bill (after we tried for about 10 minutes to get anyones attention). The food, despite the looks, was rather disappointing. Nothing tasted really good. The eggs Benedict were a total disappointment. We haven't been asked how we like them, they came medium though I prefer them soft, the thin slice of ham didn't even cover the whole muffin, hardly any hollandaise, both portions were served on one plate, as I asked for another plate it took so long I got up and got one myself. The hollandaise had no flavour whatsoever. Now the oAll other items also had no flavour or tasted strange. The roast beef was so overcooked that it was hard to cut. The whole experience was a major disappointment and is definitely not worth the money they are charging. The attached pictures show how awesome it looks, but that's really where anything positive ends. Stay away and save your money. Now they're asking me for another "chance"... I will definitely not spend another 40 bucks a person for the mere chance they...
