Read moreI am Bangladeshi. And as a Bangladeshi visiting a Bangladeshi restaurant, I am quite finicky about the quality of food. I don't go to a Bangladeshi restaurant expecting the cleanest floors, the nicest décor, or a fancy wine selection. I only go for food. MY food. And Utsav did not disappoint. My last few visits all came within the last two weeks . During Ramadan I was invited by friends for the iftar buffet (iftar is the meal Muslims eat when they break fast at dusk). The buffet spread was excellent. The quality was very good. The beef curry was especially tasty. It seems Utsav, under new ownership has restored its Bangladeshi identity. That scored points with me. For a while the restaurant was trying to cater to a broader sub-continental community. I am not going to denigrate Indian or Pakistani food -- which I also enjoy immensely. However, a Bangladeshi restaurant serving Indian or Pakistani style cuisine is like me competing in a Hindi karaoke contest. Today my wife and I were feeling too lazy to cook and we picked up Kacchi biryani. I like my wine or beer with Kacchi so we decided to bring it home. It was the best Kacchi from a restaurant I have had anywhere outside Bangladesh. Kacchi is very fatty so if you like your wine or beer -- get a full-bodied Bordeaux or a local IPA. There are many to choose from. Tonight the Trolley #5 IPA paired extremely well with Ustav's Kacchi. If they manage to sustain the quality and retain the Bangladeshi identity in their cooking, we will be...
Read moreA Mixed Experience at Utsuv Sweet and Restaurant. I recently visited Utsuv Sweet and Restaurant, eager to indulge in their Bangladeshi traditional breakfast buffet and sweet treats. While the buffet exceeded my expectations, the sweet dessert experience left a sour taste.
The buffet spread was impressive, with a wide variety of traditional Bangladeshi breakfast dishes. The khichuri, paired with flavour full dishes like Goru vuna, murgi vuna. Beef was cooked to perfection. The service was attentive, and the staff ensured our plates were always full. However, the sweet dessert experience was disappointing. I opted for the rosogolla, but unfortunately, it tasted stale and old. When I brought this to the server's attention, they assured me it was fresh, which was hard to believe. The mishti doi, too, lacked the usual sweetness and creaminess. It seemed like the sweets were not freshly prepared, which was a letdown. Despite the sweet disappointment, I would still recommend Utsuv Sweet and Restaurant for their buffet spread and traditional breakfast dishes. However, they need to work on their sweet dessert quality and honesty with customers. Freshness matters, especially when it comes to sweets. Rating: 3.5/5 stars. Note: I hope the management takes my feedback constructively and improves their sweet dessert quality and...
