Update
AKK has moved to a larger location in the same strip mall (2 o'clock from prior location). I visited the new location for the first time this week as I had to take two friends to dinmer. My choice of restaurant was based on excellent taste. AKK has set up a nice location with triple capacity if not quadruple (it used to be very small and those who love it, including me wished them a larger location ... and it came true!).
Same great taste, service and attitude alongwith, now, a great ambience too. The place is run by a family headed by father who is a generous guy and a great host and so are other family members (and staff is trained like that as well). In addition to bbq platter, we also ordered two gravies: Peshawari Mutton Karahi and White chicken karahi.
Gola kababs were yummy! Fish tikka and malai boti were also great like before. We found mutton karahi to be awesome as well. White chicken karahi however does need a lot of improvement. Best part is that the management is very open to feedback even though they have been in business for so long. That's quality of businesses that continuously improve and maintain quality. One of the management members (also family member) explicitly asked for feedback and as I gave it, she took it very positively and said it will be communicated to the Chef.
I find it very important to mention that AKK offers great economical rates while provides high quality food. The mutton karahi had excellent quality meat and 400 gms just priced close to $14. That's incredible. I have noticed that AKK believes in serving people and not extracting money from them. Money comes itself when you have intentions to serve others. One can't not wish them well each time. I hope these values and attitude survives through any level of future growth.
Looking forward to visiting with family next time.
P.S. Forgot to take any pictures of food or location this time.
Excellent Karachi based bar b q! We went there for the first time about ten days ago and ordered family deal (Gola kabab, fish tikka, chicken boneless tikka/boti) and an order of Dhaga kabab. Dhaga kabab was the best!! You can't visit AKK and not order dhaga kabab. Fish tikka was great too. Gola kabab and tikka were also good. Today we went again as my 4 years old son and I were craving for dhaga kabab. We ordered same deal again but replaced chicken tikka with milai tikka. Dhaaga kabab was like last time mouth watering! Fish tikka was even better than last time. Delicious. We found milai tikka to be great getting more points than chicken tikka. Gola kabab was good like last time. I'd prefer to order more dhaaga kabab next time and skip gola kabab though it's also very good.
We haven't tried non bbq items yet. But I think those will be good as well. Will try next time if we go as a big party because, if we go again as a small party we'll continue enjoying their Karachi style bbq. Biryani is definitely on my list for next time.
We recently moved from GTA and being a foodie I can tell there is no match of these items esp dhaaga kabab and fish...
Read moreWhat a fantastic New Year's Night Delight! Our dining experience at Apna Karachi Kitchen in Calgary was an absolute joy. Undoubtedly, it is an exquisite haven for typical Karachi taste. From the moment we stepped in, we were greeted with genuine warmth and hospitality by the attentive staff. Their friendly demeanor and attentiveness throughout the meal added a personal touch to the overall experience. Now, let's talk about the food. We ordered almost all the Grill BBQ items, and each one was very tasty and delicious. However, the Gola Kabab, Dhaga Kabab, and Fish Tikka were exceptional! The famous Pathan Tea of Karachi was an added attraction. Each dish was a testament to authentic Karachi cuisine, bursting with bold and rich flavors that transported us to the streets of Karachi, reminding us of Zamir Ansari, Merrut Kabab, and others. The freshness of ingredients and the skillful blend of spices truly showcased the culinary expertise of the chefs. Despite the high quality of food and service, the pricing was incredibly reasonable. It felt like a fantastic value for the delectable dishes and the impeccable service provided. However, we would like to suggest an improvement: ensuring the food remains warm during the meal. Mr. Sulaiman, the owner of the restaurant, could consider investing a little more to keep the food warm for dining-in customers, perhaps by using slow cookers like Crock-Pot or Instant Pot. In conclusion, my visit to Apna Karachi Kitchen was a memorable culinary journey. The staff's hospitality, exceptional food quality, beautiful presentation, and reasonable pricing make it a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic taste of Karachi in Calgary. I can't wait to return and indulge in their exquisite...
Read moreMy wife and I ordered chicken handi and been nihari with plain naan. The chicken handi was fantastic and very flavourful. It's the biggest reason why I will visit again in shaa Allah. The nihari was ok, but I think I just don't like most nihari dishes here in Calgary, it's a personal taste difference. The owner Salman told me they were going to start beef seekh kabab the day after my visit, so I will have to go back in the future to try that out as well.
The naan was amazing, very fluffy and delicious, and had a unique beautiful pattern on the top which is a nice touch. It's great for absorbing any sauce and even to eat a few bites on its own. They're also very big, the size of a dinner plate and about 1.5 inches thick.
They gave us chopped green chilis as well which was a great addition and made it feel like eating at home. I love adding chillies to my meal.
Service was excellent, I called ahead to see if it's busy and the owner Salman was very helpful over the phone to let me know when they will have a table and even reserved one for my wife and I. He was very hospitable in the restaurant as well, and waited til we arrived before putting the naans on so they stay hot and fresh. He also gave us a complimentary custard with mango puree. The server was also very helpful and kind. Overall 5/5 customer service. Prices were very good too considering the average costs of desi food in Calgary.
Only issue other than not liking the nihari too much was the tables had broken seats so we could not sit face to face and had to sit side by side on the same booth. The owner did mention they are looking for a bigger...
