Golden Fish & Chips — Restaurant in Centre Wellington

I rarely leave reviews, but wanted to warn people. This is NOT good food. It was a Friday, so we thought fish & chips was the way to go and decided to order from a fish and chips restaurant. It had quite good reviews, which I always read before trying out a new place. If my experience wasn’t so completely negative, I would’ve just chocked it up as ‘one of those things’. But it was, almost completely negative. The 15 min wait was 25 min. The fries were flavourless - we had to fix them in our air-fryer when I got home. The portion of shrimp and scallops in the Fisherman’s platter was meagre. The portion of halibut itself was on the small size and the batter in the halibut and chips order was chewy. Also oily. Like REALLY oily. The tartar sauce came in a condiment packet, was runny and tasted like fake mayo. The gravy I ordered and paid for was not in the bag when I opened it at home. In retrospect, I think I might be OK with that… The only good part of the meal were the Portuguese tarts that I am willing to bet came from somewhere else. My wife, Verna Vilon & I went to Fergus for a day out together & happened to notice this place across from KFC by the Walmart there. We went in & tried the food for the very 1st time & we had an amazing experience. The owner/operator was VERY friendly, & the classic atmosphere including an "oldies" radio station playing classic music really took us back in time to a better time that was 100% peaceful & enjoyable. So so disappointed!! I planned fish for Good Friday dinner. Paid $112.00 for dinner for 4 was told to be there at a specific time to avoid line up. My Food was cold.and the fish and fries soggy. Instead of taking care of the pre orders first they were busy dealing with walk ins. The fish portions are now smaller than they hissed to be. Not enough fries for 4 adults. The slaw was a small container again Manet a tablespoon for each of us. Originally ordered 4 single dinners but at their advice for cost savings went to a dinner for 4 family pack.
