This restaurant used to be a GEM. I've eaten at over 200 different sushi restaurants all over canada. I travel a lot for work and sushi is what i eat when I'm not home.
Yesterday however, I had one of the worst sushi meals I've ever ordered out of the 2000+ times I've had sushi in over 10 years. The fish was warm, and my dynamite roll had cold stale shrimp tempura. For $40 which is what my meal cost, you better cook me FRESH crispy tempura. What I got was stale pre-prepared tempura. I can tell the difference when it's cold and soggy.
I ordered the Bara Combo. I opted for all Salmon instead of mixed sushi which was a $5 upcharge. I know this is a tourist area but I can get the same meal for $19 tax-in when I go to the heart of Downtown Toronto and it's way fresher. $40? You better wrap it in a nice presentation and throw in a slice of fruit or something (which many do).
NOPE! I got my order, no garnish, no wasabi, no ginger, in a styrofoam takeout box with 3 tiny packets of soy sauce. $40!!! Liquid gold better come out of those soy sauce packets. Sadly, it did not.
What I got was a sad excuse of a meal. They were so busy they forgot everything that usually comes with a premium sushi order at that price tag. They had no garnish or presentation at all . It was also a styrofoam box which is rare for sushi, since usually they put it in a nice black/clear togo box with some garnish. I also only got THREE (3) tiny soy sauce packets for 20+ pieces of sushi. For $40, you can be a little less cheap and put 5-6 in there - it costs you pennies when you buy them by the thousands. I had to ration out each drop to make the bland flavorless meal taste of anything.
Let me tell you, I wish I had taken a photo. It looked like convenience store sushi you get in the states, it was so sad. Absolutely no presentation. Picture sushi thrown in a styrofoam box and bagged up. Literally nothing, not even a sliver of a carot, or that fake grass every other sushi place uses?
Unfortunately I didn't realize how bad the food was, or what they forgot to add until I drove off. The parking lot was packed so I drove 1-2 KM away to a random public parking lot to enjoy the meal with a Netflix movie as I was 2+ hours away from home.
I used to come here every time I was in Collingwood which is 4-5 times a year. It's been consistently getting worse but they somehow are consistently getting busier. I guess standards can be low with such minimal competition. If you opened up in the GTA with food like that, you'd be out of business in 6 months to a year tops. Now I wont step foot in there again.
They should rename it to "The Lacking Sumo" as my meal lacked any flavor, presentation, or freshness at all.
Good luck, and i hope your restaurant turns things around. You used to be so good and the high prices justified...
Read moreQuality of food was average at best. Expected much better quality for the price. Charged mandatory 18% service charge on top of HST for mediocre service. If you charge tips on top of HST, you're actually charging over 20% tip!!! We got a "private room" but it was just an old room in an old house with no decor. Definitely not worth the premium price.
"In regards to the amount of tip, I believe that one server trying their hardest to go up and down the second floor to give your group a service, that server needs a cheers."
We were fine with the mandatory 18% service charge since we agreed to dine there. As I mentioned, I felt that the quality of service did not reflect the 18%. In addition, it is not 18% if you charge 18% on top of HST. You are charging just over 20% tip. Yes, the server had to walk up and down the stairs. You put us up there. That is part of the job. Some tables are harder, some tables are easier. Would the service charge be lower if you sat us downstairs?!?! Is the service charge dependent on where you sit?
"Additionally, you mentioned very important aspect of our restaurant. The minimal decor in our old house is to present the beauty of the original antique of the house which was built in decades ago. Let me ask you this question, would you put led light on your 1973 year classic Ferrari?"
The room next door had a dirty table with 1/2 eaten pizza and boxes all laid out around. I would not consider that proper decor. And no, I would not put LEDs on a 1973 classic Ferrari. But why use a 1973 classic...
Read moreWe were in search for Japanese food while visiting Blue Mountain. The Hungry Sumo was about at 10 mins drive from the resort.
The restaurant is actually in a house. Pretty unique. A bit old and run down and not as modern but it’s clean enough. Parking was tough when we got there someone left but not a lot of parking spots in the back.
There was 12 of us so they gave us a private room in the upper floor of this house. Note there’s a 18% gratuity charge automatically when it’s 10 guests or more.
I gave this restaurant a 3 stars since some of the dishes were bit that great but a couple they were good. There were a few dishes to definitely avoid. The assortment of tempura is great, fresh and crispy. But when we ordered a second order of just shrimp tempura which was more expensive the shrimps came out so small. Not worth it. Stick with the assorted tempura. The sushi boat for $69 was not worth it. The portion was small. The yaki udon chicken was ok. The portion was small for $23!! With small pieces is chicken. The teriyaki steak was the worst dish, do not get this dish. It was like a stir fry sliced beef as per picture attached. It was NOT steak and for $25?? Not worth the price. The gyoza and age dashi tofu were good. I think only the fried items came out decent.
I think the food was overpriced and not the best quality. I will probably...
