We ordered the Ra Jo Yuk Gourmet Dish (spicy pork with mixed vegetables), which was not what I meant to order—I had my heart set on the spicy hot and sour version, but hey, at least I tried something new. Alongside that, we got a half seafood noodle and half Ja Jang Mian, plus a stir fried rice.
This is definitely what I would call home style Korean Chinese cooking. If you are used to places like Chiu Hong in Surrey, where flavours are bold, sweet, salty and aggressive in the best way, this is much more gentle. The Ja Jang Mian here is less sweet. The pork sauce has less salt, sugar and ginger. The seafood noodle is also much milder in spice.
At first, my taste buds were like “huh?” expecting more punch. But then my rational side kicked in and said, this is like going to your Korean friend’s house and having their grandma make you a meal. It is warm, balanced and does not leave you chugging water for hours afterward. That is worth something.
As for the banchan—it is very modest. Just yellow daikon and raw onions with hoisin sauce. I could not help but laugh a little. It feels honest, like the kitchen is just saying, “Here’s a little crunch to keep you company.”
So even though the flavours are not as intense as I usually go for, I appreciate the clean and home cooked feel. For that, I am giving it 4 stars. It is a comforting, simple spot that feels like it came from a...
Read moreA small, diner like, hole in the wall that just happens to serve solid heartwarming food. This is not high cuisine, this is not great staff, this is not ambiance. What this happens to be is Korean/Chinese comfort food, huge portions, good prices (for Vancouver) and efficient staff and pleasant food. I enjoyed the restaurant quite a bit, and will be back.
Most patrons were families and large groups. Open the door, write your name down and wait outside. The system works although some may think it is a little chaotic.
Order a combo meal if you have not been there before (we ordered B and it was good for 4 or 5 people), they are good and give you an idea of what to expect if you want to come back. You will likely be taking food home, think about that if you are doing this at the start of your evening.
The food was good, but not great. I am not an expert or even all that familiar with this cuisine, but it was filling and pleasant. The seafood soup had little seafood in it, but was tasty and I assume the draw is the noodles. The same can be said for the black bean noodles. We had the fried spicy chicken and it was nice, with orange peel, chilies and obviously not a premade commercial tub of generic sauce.
I would recommend this place to anyone interested in Korean...
Read moreAfter many recommendations from friends, I finally decided to try this establishment. I ordered the classic jajangmyeon and the tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork).
I was glad to try it as I was NOT disappointed. The jajangmyeon was probably the best I have ever had. I had tried it at many other Korean restaurants but I felt that they were lacking a kick in flavor. This place definitely had that missing flavor I was craving. The noodles were cooked perfectly and drizzled with the perfect amount of sauce. There were lots of onions in the sauce and still had a bit of crunch to it. Additionally, there were small pieces of chicken that was packed with flavor. The tangsuyuk was great as well. The sweet and sour sauce was sweet and pretty tangy. The pork was perfectly fried and not too dry.
Overall, the food lived up to my expectations and I will definitely be back for more. I ordered the two dishes for two people and we struggled to finish it. The place was very COVID friendly and had many precautions. The two servers who helped were...
