Ugh, rate higher or rate lower? Bare with this review it might be long winded but there's a reason. Let's start with one word to describe this place......"sweet" like literal sweet. The food has sooo much promise, it really does but they over sweetened everything, like everything. Ok let me explain, I ordered a beer cocktail and granted from the description it should be sweeter but it's pretty sweet. Ok let's say that's on me, let's move to a quesadilla. It's more a southwestern style beans, vegan cheese, corn etc. comes with house made salsa, hummus, guac but why the heck is it sweet? It's not a desert. Ok let's move to the Caesar salad. It was good, and could use a smidge more garlic but guess what...... sweet! Why is Caeser salad sweet? (Great question) It has potential to be one of the best vegan Caeser salads around. Ok let's keep moving on, onion rings with a garlic dip, surely that can't be sweet.......WRONG, sweet. What disappoints me the most is the food has potential to be up with the best but they go ahead and add some kind sweetener to everything. I think it's agave but who knows. Please owner's take this heart, don't change your recipes just leave out or limit the sweetener. Yours truly, I want to love it!

What a treat The Heid Out was on a winter's day! It was so warm, cozy and inviting inside. The food matched that vibe! I have to give them a huge kudos for their extensive gluten-free menu! One of the people in our party has an intolerance and they were very pleased with the amount of options they had! The fish and chips were really well done. Lots of flavour, and the batter was just right even using rice flour! They also have a good selection of vegan meals on the vegan menu, but we did not try that. The Delhi Butter Chicken was amazing! So well spiced and full of hearty flavour. Definitely one of the best! The veggies on the side were a nice touch. I find sometimes when ordering a curry, or even making it at home, that sometimes the veggies can be lacking and it was just a nice brightness to this dish. The Jerk Pineapple Pulled Pork was the perfect sandwich! The pork was tender and juicy, and had just a little bit of kick. It wasn't soggy, which is always great (nobody wants a soggy bun!) when the meat is juicy. The slaw and pineapple salsa were a great pairing with this and the ratios for all of it were perfect. Nothing overpowered anything else. And the sweet potato fries… all I can say is yum!

Such a wonderful atmosphere. The decor is well thought out and lively, clean and the lighting is perfect for an informal party or even romantic dinner. Most people should reserve romance for the shoulder hours as it's quite a busy place during the evening dinner hours. Food is quite tasty and the kitchen staff was a bit slower some days as the place sometimes has a twenty minute table wait. Consider this isn't so bad as to speak volumes about the food and the craft beers on tap. The micro brewery on site means a constant supply of house beer is available. It can be a loud place and there aren't too many real private corners or booths to be found with the open floor plan, but it leans on the side of trendy rather than cozy/private. Prices were very competitive vs other places of this nature. For this reason it elevates the Heid Out as one of the top 10 contenders for venues in the region when considering food taste-quantity vs price. Service from wait staff was extremely attentive. There were a few hiccups in the food itself but nothing that couldn't be fixed with renewed attention. All in all the few cons are easily dismissed vs the overall positive experience. An easy 5-stars for this Cranbrook gem.
