Update: Since the original review. We ate here a few times since as our food stop to and from Victoria. The prices has gone up since but not surprising with the inflation issues of 2022. However it's still great fish and chips even without the ayce Tuesday. I recommend going for the halibut it's worth the extra money. The tarter sauce issue I had with them on my original review is not an issue now. It seems like it might of been that day but since I like the tarter sauce.
Original review: We came on Tuesday for the all you can eat for $16, but due to Covid-19 it's not offered. We decided to still give them a try. My wife ordered the West Coast Bisque (Mix seafood thick soup) $4.5 and British Traditional (2 Hadcod, Panko Shrimp, slaw and chips) $22.75. I ordered the 2 pieces Cod, slaw and chips $17.75.
The Bisque was pack full of seafood and flavor in a small bowl. It came out piping hot and we really enjoyed it. The British Traditional is basically 2 pieces Hadcod, slaw and chips plus $4 for Panko Shrimp. Definitely worth the extra $4 if you are hungry because they give a good amount of it. Panko Shrimp is was good along with the slaw. Both fish had great meat size, lightly batter and oil was fresh. The two thing we didn't like much was the chips and tartar sauce. The fries lacked a bit of flavor. However I believe you can substitute for onion rings or more slaw as the other tables did that. The tartar sauce was not the best I had. The sauce is the 2nd most important thing! Which is what kept me from giving it 5 stars.
If you are undecided between the two fish. Me and my wife think it's worth the extra $1 for the Hadcod. It had a lighter and less fishy taste vs Cod. Halibut the best, but also comes with a high price, but Hadcod is a nice balance of quality and value. Stay away from Pollock if you see it offered.
Service was quick and friendly. I am glad we tried them out and hope they bring back the Tuesday all you can eat for $16, but I doubt I can eat more than 2-3...
Read moreI have been coming here for over five years an it was very very good. I grew up in the potatoes and fish industry in Ladner BC. I am a conasuer to say the least. I had always ordered halibut in my F&C order until someone at this place recommended the cod. No way!! But I went for it . It was great . It was as good as the halibut !! I was very surprised but continued to order the cod for another 2 years 2 ties a month . Everything was bang on every time ! The best . About two months ago everything took a big dive . Fist few things I left unsaid but I was disappointed in the quality . One night I got home with my order and my chips were in terrible shape . Like they shouldn't have been wrapped and sold!!!! I showed them to 10 other people and they didn't believe me!!! I phoned and complained and it was explained to me that it was because their potatoes were old and in the rotting stage . Where they start starching and producing lots of sugar and they don't fry well. So why sell them ??? He said he had too!! Anyway he offered a free meal and that was that. I left it for two months and trued an order . Chips were good like they are 9 of ten but the cod was terrible . The batter was a mess ! I am done . This place changed management or owners not sure what but it's steadily less and less about quality food and more about something else. Both times my food went in the garbage . I have a pretty strong stomach and am a hungry guy!! It's rare for any food to it the garbage can !! Hope they get it together but for now this customer is done Good...
Read moreWhile passing through town we were on the hunt for a lunch of fish and chips. We spotted Salty's while on the highway going through Duncan and decided to stop for lunch. My partner and I ordered the jumbo tiger prawns, the chowder bisque, and the 8 OZ halibut – from the captains table dish. First after initially only ordering one chowder we immediately ordered a second, what a treat the tomato based broth and heaping amount of seafood was a great treat, next the tiger prawns arrived, not to bad the light batter and cocktail sauce went well together, finally the main entrée arrived, the basket of shrimp scallops and oysters went well with the chowder, the halibut was nicely battered definitely not over done and paired incredibly well with the house made tartar sauce, definitely glad we stopped here for lunch, would for sure stop here again just...
