tl;dr: Excellent vegan pizza, relaxed atmosphere, wonderful cashew egg nog latte, great service. Not a very quick meal, but worth the wait, and good place in which to wait.
On a whim, my partner and I popped in here on a Tuesday evening. We've been meaning to come by for a while -- we live in the area -- but had never made it down. Seated immediately, the only delay in getting drinks involved us making the decision; the beer list was small but with some good options. Once watered, we both settled on pizzas: I had the buffalo chicken, while my partner had the featured tuna melt.
It took a little while for the food to arrive, but that was no issue since drinks were delivered quickly and the space was bright and comfortable. My partner ordered the cashew egg nog latte, which I cannot recommend enough. The nog is made in-house, and steams up incredibly, with long-lasting microfoam and a rich, unctuous texture that felt like cream down to the last sip. It was spiced generously and sweetened perfectly -- not too sweet, but enough to taste and add some comfort.
In time, the pizzas arrived, and we were not disappointed. They are similar in style and scale to Famoso, albeit with slightly thicker crust; to my mind this is no drawback as it gives a little more structure to the slice. The buffalo chicken came with a spicy base, little marinated seitan chicken bits, and topped with a very aromatic dill cream that balanced the heat nicely. The tuna melt came with copious nut cheese, chickpea tuna, and crisp red onions to break up the otherwise somewhat uniform texture.
The price, while not super cheap, is entirely reasonable for a higher-quality pizza. Service was unobtrusive and unpretentious, which was very appreciated. I look forward to returning to try another pie, and maybe some of...
Read moreBlown away by the customer service. My husband and I came to celebrate an accomplishment as well as to try Die Pie for the first time. It was busy but we were happy to sit at the bar. We ordered two pizzas, both on gluten free crusts as I'm Celiac and we wanted to share. We waited about 45 minutes for the pizza. When they finally arrived, we were told that they use a separate oven for the gluten free pizzas and the oven is slower and smaller than the regular brick pizza oven. I was just happy to eat! The pizzas tasted amazing. However, after a couple slices, the server came over to inform that there may have been cross-contamination with gluten; she said there was a mix-up with a similar order that was not gluten free, and some wheat flour was likely on the bottom of my pizza. She was extremely apologetic, and immediately ordered a replacement order of the pizzas that were 100% gluten free. I did get a bit sick from the contamination, but I understand that these things happen and it's a risk to take when eating out. The other pizzas were cooked quickly, and given to us. The staff advised that they had paid for our meal to apologize, and gave me a $25 gift card in hopes I would try Die Pie again. I was so pleased with their transparency, as most restaurants likely wouldn't have even said anything. Anyway, the pizzas were delicious! We got the buffalo chicken (I don't know how they replicated the texture of chicken, but they did!!) and the mac and cheese. Both phenomenal. I can't wait to try another! Thank you, Die Pie, for bending over backwards to correct mistakes and not...
Read moreMy fave vegan restaurant in Edmonton I must say!!
I love their Buffalo Chick’n and Pierogie Pizzas the best. I’m not a fan of the Margherita Pizza as it’s too plain for me but perhaps if you like really simple pizzas you might enjoy this one. :)
I ••LOVE•• the Spinach and Artichoke dip. SO GOOOOOD!!!! Better than the dairy versions that I remember having. Sometimes I feel when we order it out on Skip the Dishes that we get less of the dip :( so hopefully they see this and decide to be a bit more generous in the future. ;)
They have a butternut squash pasta right low which is pretty tasty. The pasta that was there earlier in the summer was sooooo bomb.
I love that they are always changing up their menu, trying new things and listening to customer feedback. Overall I think they are a really great establishment that cares about their customers. I think within a few years they might be able to love to a larger location. 😉 They definitely get busy enough! One complaint would be that it sometimes gets a bit too loud in there since it’s a small space. And that I wouldn’t mind something chocolate on the dessert menu pls!!
Thank you Die Pie for working so hard to get veganism out there to Edmonton! Your Kaju cheese (can purchase at the restaurant or farmers markets) are amazing, and I love that you opened up Pêche Cafe and Seitan’s Disciples. Maybe a food truck in the future? Haha. Will...
