I've read some positive and negative reviews on here, but decided to give it a try just to see how I can compare my experience at The Angry Crab in the States to The Captain's Boil.
The concept of eating from a bag with no cutlery is the way to go to enjoy the experience of a seafood boil. If you except forks, knives, spoons and plates, then don't go here if you are afraid to get your hands dirty. But if you do require a spoon or fork, just ask. Most of the plastic and paper is all recycled materials and biodegradable.
A lot of reviews on here also says that they leave feeling hungry still. Well yeah, if you order like the more expensive items which weigh more because of the heavy shells and that they have little meat in them, so of course you will be hungry after. A lobster can cost you $57 to $60 depending on the season. If you do add ons and order side dishes, it can cost you close to $100 for 1 person! Order smart and eat smart and you can definitely leave feeling full and would not cost you an arm and a leg. I do think the menu is a bit pricy.
Went here on October 25th, 2018. While I've tried a seafood boil before at The Angry Crab in the States, this is my first time with The Captain's Boil here in the city. Took my parents out for lunch and we started with the cajun fries; it was good and crispy, but I thought there was not enough cajun seasoning to them. The cajun fried rice was good, and there was a good amount of buttery cajun flavour to it. The shrimps and the mussels both lacked in sauce and there was just lots of the cajun oil/butter than an actual sauce; not enough sauce to even stick/coat or scoop any sauce onto the mussels or shrimps. My shrimps and crawfish at The Angry Crab was drenched in the cajun sauce and it was so good I could literally drink it! A bit dissapointed with the fish teriyaki and rice because there was no crawfish as it's not in season at the moment, so they ended up giving us 3 mussels, 3 clams and 3 shrimps with the fish and rice; besides not having the crawfish, we liked it.
The service was pretty good for a slow afternoon and not many people during the lunch hour or the afternoon. It's tough to eat something like this in a rush and have to go back to work right away, but I'm sure it gets busier during dinner time to closing.
Some things I didn't like is how you just pile your garbage on the table and it just looks dirty and messy. At The Angry Crab, they have a pail or a bucket at center table where everyone can just toss shells or napkins in and it looks cleaner. I highly suggest adding the buckets for tossing in scraps and dirty napkins. As mentioned above already, there was not enough sauce in any of the seafood boil bags, but just full of cajun oil/butter. Need more sauce! Also, at The Angry Crab, they remove the head on the shrimps to allow customers to get more shrimps in their bags. I think they should remove the head on the shrimps; there's nothing edible there, but it just adds extra weight meaning I or the customers are receiving less shrimps.
Overall, my experience here did not live up to my experience at The Angry Crab. Even though The Angry Crab is a US restaurant, I think the price and quality of food at The Angry Crab was way better. I'm no food blogger or an expert in seafood boil, but just someone who enjoys food and tells...
Read moreMy husband I went to Captains Boil for date night Feb 1 2020. It was our first time there. As we stood at the entrance waiting for someone to seat us, I noticed people eating their food with plastic gloves. We should have turned around at that point but my husband was hungry and wanted seafood. The restaurant was busy with two larger groups and random guests, however not packed; there were many available tables. When the staff finally saw us standing at the door, instead of greeting us with a Hello or Welcome, she asked if we had a reservation. I said that we did not. She sat us at a booth/table combo. She gave us the two sided menu and indicated that our server would be right with us. We looked over the menu and figured out the 3 steps to order a personalized combo of food/sauce/heat. As we were eating I looked around at others meals and dining experience. One person had a paper plate. It was about 10 minutes and she returned saying that she would be our server. She asked if we decided what we would like to eat (did not ask about beverages). I ordered the chicken slices with captain’s boil sauce and no heat. 2 sides are included (choice of corn on the cob, potato or rice). I requested 2 corn. My husband ordered market price lobster with captain’s boil sauce and mild heat with corn an potato. Our server repeated our order back to us. It was correct. As she was just about to walk away when I asked if we could order our beverages. She apologized and took our order; 2 ginger ales. On the brown paper lined table there is plastic bibs and plastic gloves to use when the meal arrives. We received our pop. My meal came first. It was in a biodegradable bag. I received a plastic fork and no plate. I waited to start eating until my husband got his food - 7 minutes later! We put on the bibs and gloves and opened our bags. I took a bite of the chicken. It was bland and slimy. I was unsure if it was cooked due to the rubberiness and sliminess. There was so much oil in the sauce. My husband used the lobster cracker tool and got some meat out. He said he really liked the taste. He picked up the potato out of his bag and took a bite then put it right down indicating it was not good. As our meal progressed our server did not come to ask us how things were or if we needed anything. I was out of pop so I put my sauce covered plastic glass on the side of the table where she would hopefully see it was empty. As she walked by she saw it and asked if I wanted more. I said yes and she filled it up. We were “done” our meal sitting at the table (I did not eat all my slimy chicken slices and my husband only ate his lobster) with our bags closed. Our server passed by asking if she could take them away; never did she ask us how our meals are/were. As she picked up the bags to remove from the table my husband requested the bill. Right away she came back with the bill and machine. We paid for the $80+ meal and we were outta there to never return due to inattentive service, questionable doneness, single use plastics (gloves, fork...). We proceeded to Burger Priest for a burger. The rating of 2 stars is ONLY because my husband enjoyed...
Read moreThis used to be one of my favorite places to eat, but after the last couple of experiences, it just isn't it. January 15, I ordered the mix & match (chicken + shrimp, captains boil mild) for takeout. Took it home to eat, the chicken was good but the shrimp was mushy and texture was weird. But I thought maybe they'd overcooked it and ate it anyways. Few hours later it was pretty clear I got food poisoning (was not a fun time in the bathroom). Tried to sleep it off but the stomach pain was too much so ended driving myself to the emerg. I phoned captains boil next morning to let them know, and asked to speak to a manager but the lady on the phone said there wasn't one present. So i told her about me getting sick, and her response was "Oh really? I ate the shrimp yesterday and i feel fine." I told her I'm not calling to complain or for compensation, and that I'm a big fan of captain boil and just wanted to inform them so that they can do a proper checkup. All i got was an "oh ok thank you, but yeah I had the shrimp and I was okay" and very deflective. I'm in the restaurant business, and the standard procedure when being informed of foodborne illness is to call the health inspector to do a review of your kitchen to make sure the kitchen is being operated in a safe manner, and if it isn't the inspector is there to help you correct your procedure so it doesn't happen again. A follow up with the customer is also the norm. Another occasion I informed them that on their ubereats, the mix & match that says "includes 2 sides" were actually charging for the sides when its supposed to be included, and they said "oh yeah its supposed to charge you". Then why does it say that the sides are included? They are also included when i order dinein, pickup, or skipthedishes, only ubereats it is not. Then on another occasion I informed them that their hours weren't updated on google (They were closing an hour before posted time) and the lady at the front just said "because of covid, the hours are changing all the time). Thats fine, but not really a valid reasoning for why you wouldn't update your hours and inform your guests so they don't make the trip and show up to a closed store.. If you don't know how, go on your google my business app, click profile, view all, then click your open hours and you can edit them. Overall they just seem unresponsive to customer feedback, and after my last visit I won't be back for awhile. Hoping they improve soon because I don't know where else to get my...
