When I worked at UBC hospital a few years ago I discovered this bakery. OMG the ham baguette sandwich! So many things are good here, cookies, pies, breakfast sandwich. But the ham baguette (or I have learned to call it jambon beurre) is exquisite! Perfect, perfect, perfect. It is simple yet complex. Few ingredients, but each are top notch. Baguette is very fresh, perfect texture, just chewy enough, not springy. Ham is fresh and delicious. Beautiful fresh butter, a bit of greens, maybe some mild cheese? (I can't remember as I am in a bit of a reverie at the moment over this sandwich). SO, the sandwich complainers whingeing about the size and contents are heathens that don't know what they are talking about, nor how lucky they are to have access to this wonderful thing. I have lived in Toronto the last few years and travel a fair bit. This sandwich has set the bar for jambon beurre. I cannot find anything close in Toronto, Chicago, Detroit, Montreal or Vancouver. So every time I'm in Vancouver for a visit, I find a reason to head to UBC...yes, it's nice, beach, hiking, blah blah blah...but it's really all about this MAGNIFICENT ham sandwich / jambon beurre served at Doughgirls. Each time it is the same, I don't get it heated or toasted. Just the sandwich Ma'am. I have never been disappointed in the slightest. All hail...
Read moreWith the density of the neighbourhood, it’s nice to have a food option like this one that offers coffee and baked goods. Because it has more offerings than your average coffee shop (there is a Blendz down the road) there can be a line up during busy times.
When I went the other day, there was a line up and after ordering a flatbread, breakfast sandwich, Korean wrap, a couple of coffees and a couple of cookies, I asked if I could take my 6 year old son to the washroom. They declined the request rather rudely. I know it’s a pandemic, but I think we are at the point where we now people aren’t getting Covid-19 from public restrooms and certain exceptions can be made using a little bit of common sense and empathy.
We had to look for another washroom, and then went to a playground about a 5 minute walk away. After sitting down, we realized they had forgotten to pack the cookies we ordered. We walked back, waited in line (again) and let them know they forgot the cookies. They were apologetic, but did not offer anything to compensate for their mistake.
Anyway, on to the food. Considering the cost and wait, I expected more. It looked and tasted like the old Bread Garden restaurants from the 1990s/2000s. Fine, but nothing to write home about.
If we are in the neighbourhood again, we’d probably opt for some Virtuous...

I first decided to give the place a try when my girlfriend brought me back one of their Double Chocolate Cookies. The cookie was great so I decided to have lunch there one time back from class. To my disappointment the Shepard's Pie was bland and so was the tea.
I went back a second time for their brownie and this time for a mocha. Found the brownie to be too dry and hard for my liking and the mocha is easily beat by Blenz half a block down.
I decided the only thing worth getting was their Double Chocolate Cookies and went back several times. However, the last 3 times I went the cookies seemed to have become thinner and much harder, it would seem that the store is trying to cut down on margin for one of their best selling item (based on my assumption due to the many times they were sold out the cookie).
The staff and store itself is very nice but I find it difficult to give the cafe/bakery any better ratings when it lacks in quality their two main products (pastries and coffee) and even manage to mess up the one remaining product I...
