North Bar & Grill — Restaurant in Fort St. John

I did email this in but have received zero reply.

If I can start by saying the staff were superb, very attentive and suitably chatty.

In terms of food, my steak (10oz ribeye) was nicely cooked and well seasoned. However, the roast potatoes were incredibly disappointing. They really tasted as though they'd been reheated and not cooked and served fresh. Roast potatoes should have a crisp outside and a soft squishy interior. These were sadly 'cardboard-like' in texture on the outside as though they'd just been reheated. When paying $48 for a main course, I'd expect everything to be cooked freshly, not reheated.

Our daughter had steak which was nicely cooked as well. However, I'd question why it was sliced before serving. Steak should be left to rest, slicing it seemed counterproductive as it then became dry. The mashed potatoes, similar to the roasts just seemed reheated rather than fresh.

The demi-glace was delicious and very flavoursome as was the garlic aioli.

Our son's mini-burgers were also lovely and my wife's dish was delicious although it wasn't a Thai Red Curry sauce in our opinion.

I really don't like grumbling about meals out but when we're paying what we'd consider high prices for local food, there is a hope and expectation that it's freshly cooked.

The best meal we’ve had since moving to FSJ! We went to the North Bar & Grill for our anniversary and the food do not disappoint. In a sea of chain restaurants, this restaurant is a gem that FSJ should be proud to have!

I’m not sure if the menu was pared down because of covid but even then, I had a hard time deciding what to eat. The prawn appetizer was absolutely amazing. The prawns were huge and the sauce provided was a nice change from your normal seafood sauce. My husband had the Cajun Salmon burger and raved about it, even the French fries were good. I had the Smoked Chicken Penne and it surely did not disappoint. I usually don’t order pasta dishes at restaurants but was very glad I did. All the flavours blended so perfectly together and it wasn’t heavy like most pasta dishes. I found the prices to be extremely reasonable as well. Service was excellent. Atmosphere was nice. Great presentations. A fairly deep menu with many appealing choices. Appies were fantastic. My medium rare steak was blood rare, so someone wasn't confident in getting steak temperatures correct. The pricing is in line with local choices. Not cheap, but that's what it is for a decent meal in FSJ. Our server was decent but maybe needed some help with nuance given that this is supposed to be higher end. Plate piling on the table is diner style, not top tier dining room stuff. A tray stand for clearing is pretty standard in that sort of environment. As with every local eatery, the atmosphere is a challenge.
