Molly's Reach was a fictional restaurant in the real community of Gibson's Landing, British Columbia, during the nineteen years the Canadian television series The Beachcombers was set there. The building is now a real restaurant. The show's fictional restaurant was named after the character who owned it, who served as a mother-figure for other characters.[2] A reach is a geographical term for a section of a river. As the town cafe and natural meeting point, where Nick also rented a room as office space for his salvage company, much of the drama happened in and immediately around Molly's Reach.
The original structure was built in 1931, and served a variety of purposes, including a second hand store, a general store, a hardware store and a liquor store, prior to serving as a set for the television show. After the show ended it was turned into an actual restaurant.
The Beachcombers was the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's longest running series, one which was re-sold in fifty foreign markets, and fans of the show, both foreign and domestic, seek out the restaurant. The restaurant's walls bear many photos featuring the show's cast and crew. In 2016 the Vancouver Sun called the restaurant Gibsons' "most prominent landmark".It is located in the middle of town on the main highway, just up the street from the government dock.
A made-for-TV movie, The New Beachcombers, to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the original series first episode, revolved around a fictional fight to prevent the restaurant being torn down and replaced by condominiums.
The building was put up for sale on September 22,...
Read moreMy husband and I came here for breakfast. Right when we walked in we heard the cook berating the servers about food sitting out. I understand that having food sit out isn't food safe, and it has customers waiting longer however the cook was incredibly rude to the servers. There is a more tactful way to communicate with servers than just yelling at them in a quiet restaurant at 8:30 in the morning.
I had requested my eggs be cooked through for my kind of a full English breakfast as I am pregnant and runny yolks are currently to be avoided. What I received was a bowl full of hard beans and poached eggs. We asked the server if this was correct as the menu said there would also be cheese and green onions. It was also just a massive bowl of beans. She said it should be layered in but I did not see any. She came back a bit later and said the cooks made a mistake because I changed my eggs. We told her the beans weren't cooked properly and she was incredibly apologetic. I ordered the tofu scramble instead and that was perfectly fine. The tofu didn't have a ton of flavour, but the potatoes and sauteed kale and onions were good.
All in all, I don't think we will be returning. It is a beautiful spot, and the servers were so kind but the situation with the cook made us uncomfortable, and the food was so subpar especially for the...
Read moreThis place leans heavy on the iconic Molly's Reach cafe of Beachcombers fame (TV series on CBC in the 70s). It still has the huge sign out front, and the amazing location right at the foot of the wharf in Gibsons. The actual food is from the Black Bean Cafe located inside. It's self service as you order at the front counter and anything that you can't bring to the table with you they will bring out when it is ready.
Inside is a bit tired and has a lot of nostalgic photos, some of which are from the Beachcombers TV show. The tables are pretty close together and because its an older building it can get noisy as sound echos around a lot. Food is OK, nothing special, and prices are on par with most of the other places in Sechelt. We got the Relic Burger with fries, smoked salmon bagel, turkey brie panini, and vegan veggie sandwich. All pretty good flavours (the burger can get a bit messy to eat as everything tends to slide out). The bread and bun were fresh and soft. It would have been nice to have an option to sub out the kettle chips with a salad or coleslaw. The only option was fries for an extra $5.
The baked goods and coffee menu looked good, but will have to try that next time...
