I have never reviewed anyplace before, I have to go out of my way this time to do so... The sign outside the pub stated best pub in town 2017 (must be the only pub in town). The online reviews were great! Sorry to be honest , worst food ever. The first waitress (that left after taking our order but returned as we were done, after replacing us with someone new who at the very least let us know it was a mistake for choosing the home made bread as it is hard crunchy and hard to eat which the first waitress did not mention)kept referencing the sketchy looking young cook as "the chef" I asked if the fries were real- home cut- fresh cut- real potatoes. The response I received was priceless.... "yes they are real made and frozen by cavendish flash frozen" in other words frozen fries not fresh.I ordered the big barrel breakfast eggs looked like they were cooked in a cast iron frying pan (black eggs) aka (dirty grill) the hash browns were real and cooked in house like the waitress stated but she forgot to mention that they were nearly black as well and most likely refried or reheated for the past 10 days over and over again. I am still trying to figure out how ketchup ended up on one as I NEVER eat ketchup. Bacon was soaked in grease and toast was like eating bread crumbs (crunchy). My other half had the pubs clubhouse which they neglect telling you it is not a three layered clubhouse like every other clubhouse I have ever heard of. Not to mention over ripe tomatoes and the home made bread falling apart (crumbs) leaving nothing in her hand but the chicken and lettuce. My sons hamburger was actually great! He only orders hamburgers anyplace we go and he was pleased! As for the fries - he did not eat them as they were not fresh and they were not good as I said previously. Summary: service was awful (as I mentioned our waitress took our order and then left and when she returned when we were done we heard her ask the other waitress how our table was doing and she replied she didn't know, neither of them came to check on us after that point)food was nasty (except my sons burger, I am sure he was just saying that as me and his mother were arguing whose fault it was to pick that place) bill was 52 dollars not including tip as they did not deserve one but it's been 3 days and I am still sooooo angry for even spending 1 cent at that place. Very bad experience for me and my family, will never return even if...
Read moreUpdate 16 Sept 2024: Just went there today for lunch and OMG once again the food was horrible. I had the 2 piece Fish & Chips and the fish batter was rubbery and chewy, I've never in my almost 40 years alive have I ever had chewy batter. The fish was super oily and somehow didn't really taste like anything. If you want a decent Fish & Chips go to Big Scoop. This place has some of the grossest food I've ever eaten.
I was just thinking "I haven't been to Oaken in a while" but there's a reason for that. There's only a handful of places to eat in this boring town and Oaken has a chance to be the place to go but the food is horrendous. Every time I went here I got sick after, Poutine, Fish and Chips, Fish Tacos and then the Mac N Cheese. The Fish and Chips made me so sick I thought I had food poisoning, I've never had a Fish and Chips where the Batter felt like it was soaked in water first, extremely soggy. Fish batter is suppose to be super crispy and being in Nova Scotia and not knowing how to make a nice Fish batter is insulting. The servers however are great, very friendly and I have 0 complaints about them. But I haven't been here in almost a year because of how bad the food can be.
My Inlaws moved here from BC last year and they only went here once and said its terrible food also. I highly recommend you rethink your kitchen staff or check for cleanliness because food shouldn't taste this gross.
Alcohol experience seemed good, Glasses seemed clean, nothing foreign in the drinks and they were cold and tasty.
Restaurant Atmosphere is pretty standard, nothing exciting. I also remember we almost puked at the smell of that god awful hand sanitizer they made you use when you went in, I've never smelled anything so repulsive before in my life. and the tables were always so sticky.
Id really like to go back cause its the only Pub/Restaurant like this as far as I know. Id love to know if the menu or kitchen staff has changed...

First of all, I've only ever been to Greenwood once before, we stopped somewhere then too and so my expectations weren't high whatsoever. The service Josee gave us tonight reminded me of high class professional work I used to see in some of the best places in Toronto, from being attentive when drinks were low, extremely positive and friendly, and even knowing cocktail ingredients off the top of her head at the table - they had two massive tables just sit down right before we got there too.
She let us know when food was being plated, and I personally felt like she was on point the entire night. Phenomenal service.
I got the fish tacos and the chickpea wrap for later. The wrap looks delicious, the fish tacos were surprisingly delicious since I've never seen one not done with fish that isn't deep fried, but there was so much flavour and everything was cooked excellently, I would definitely order it again!
I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a smaller menu with lots of different options for both vegans and meat eaters, to children....
