Interesting warm and inviting restaurant cafe with a social aspect thrown into the mix.
At the counter where you order there are two jars. One on you left one on your right which may contain buttons. If you don't have enough for your purchase you can take a few buttons from the left side. If you want you can purchase buttons from the right and place them in the one on the left. A nice way of paying it forward. As I remember besides the professional staff they employ youth and others in a learning capacity of a way to lift them up.
Vegetarian and vegan options in light meals and in pastries. Detour coffee served and a nice selection of teas. Lights meals get delivered to the table whereas pastries and drinks get carried by the patrons along with order number table topper, as required.
Decor is a stripped to the brick former bank. Simple sturdy furniture including a couple of large tables and a window bar. Some tables have an electrical receptacle nearby. Washrooms are non-gendered single occupancy wheelchair type. The facility has two entry modes, from Barton a small step up from the side street wheelchair access.
Large sunny windows fill the space with lots of light. Background music is low enough to allow easy conversations.
With the revitalization of the former Westinghouse building a block away this place will have a steady clientele.
Not everyone will agree with their slant on all aspects of life but there did not appear any overt displays or actions regarding opinions by staff or postings.
Overall a not silent but quiet place to meet and discuss the world politics...
Read moreI have been relying on food banks and various food programs in Hamilton and as much as I appreciate them, they have all been unsafe and I even got food poisoning a couple weeks ago from it. It has really put me in a worse position I feel.
Someone told me about 541 eatery yesterday and we met here today and I swear to god this place is a breath of fresh air for anyone needing to eat but wants to feel "normal".
This place is setup like a really nice coffee shop. Not a single person there (employee or guest) was rude or had any issue. The place has a very good vibe.
I got an egg breakfast sandwich and it was only $4! I could have gotten a full breakfast for $8. This is now my go to spot for grabbing breakfast or lunch. Once I get a job back and am in a better spot, I will still come here as a paying customer and even pay everything forward and help keep it running.
If anyone is wondering how it works... if you visit and are not able to afford food, dont be ashamed. They have a jar at the front counter full of clothing buttons. Each button is worth $1. Just grab a few buttons and your meal is covered. That's it.
I swear, every other food bank and food program in Hamilton should take notes from this place. Night and day difference. These guys know how to run a successful helpful...
