I love cooking, and do it pretty well now, if I do say so myself, so I'm hard to please in a restaurant, if I know I could do it better myself. I have eaten sushi and sashimi for decades, and made many kinds at home, from vegetarian sushi rolls with brown rice, to salmon sashimi, at home, and even in the front seat of a station wagon on vacation. In recent years the sashimi in some places I frequent is being served in smaller portions, and sometimes inferior bits are served, because of the expense, I guess...NOT AT Joya! The portions for the appetizer sashimi were juicy and big: 15 pieces for C$ 12,50. Three pieces each of five types (salmon, tuna, white tuna, red snapper and yellowtail, if I am not mistaken). Absolutely melted in my mouth with no fishy taste. Even the bed of shredded daikon the sashimi perched on was so fresh that it still tasted a bit like radish! The tempura was crispy, and did NOT get soggy, even though a few pieces sat on the plate for at least 15 minutes. The sweet potato was sliced thin and perfectly cooked. Again, portions were very generous. Staff were courteous and friendly, offering advice and checking in with us several times. I will eat here again! Yum, yum yum. They take pride in their cooking....

Wonderful sushi dinner!

While in Hamilton on Friday afternoon, we had a craving for sushi ... so after a quick online search, Joya came up, and it was only a short drive to get there.

Upon entering, we were greeted by friendly staff, who quickly sat us and gave us some delicious warm tea.

The menu is rather extensive, with almost too many options. We chose to share the black dragon roll, the unagi and salmon sushi for our first course, and I opted for their beef udon soup to enjoy between the courses of sushi. We must say that the roll and sushi were so good that we ordered a second round of sushi's ... more unagi, mackerel, and two kinds of tuna. Wow! All fish was super fresh and perfectly prepared. And I must add, that the beef soup was incredible. I am a huge fan of all sorts of soups, and this one did not disappoint. The noodles were the correct consistency, the beef and slivers of veggies were spot on, but the star of the show was the broth. It was hot and hearty, with some much beefy and fatty flavour, it was slurping on an A5 wagyu steak. Wow!

Oh, we know we'll be back next time we're in Hamilton. You should...

This sushi was mind blowing. So surprised I have never been before despite it being so close-by to my old house. Was feeling like takeout sushi with my good friend, and rather than going AYCE at a different place, we ordered 4 peoples worth of food for two from here😅😅

All the sushi was delicious, but the Miso Soup blew me away, especially in comparison to anything offered in this city (that I have looked for)

Apart from the food, the service was 12/10. A warm and kind family catered restaurant providing helpful suggestions with patience and kindness.

Finally the Ambiance was fantastic. The outside looked like a regular restaurant, however upon stepping in you are greeted with an intoxicating smell, creative interior touches depicting Japan and fishing in Japan, and a big smile on the face of a very kind server and his family, who clearly has a passion for feeding people with good food. 100/10...

Got here at 7:30 and was left waiting, with only a rookie server around who didn’t take my order until 8, when (I assume) the chef or owner stepped in. The food was not good and definitely not worth the price. I ordered the beef udon — it was bland, came with pathetic little pieces of beef, and was oddly served in a stone bowl, which isn’t typical for udon. The broth was oily and murky, even though the menu clearly says it’s supposed to be a clear broth. I only came here because the Japanese restaurant near my gym that I actually like closes at 8. Won’t be coming back.

I live just a few blocks from Joya and it's hard to drive by after work without stopping in sometimes! The sushi has always been great here. Staff are friendly, have never had a bad experience in years. Definitely my favorite sushi in the city. It's worth coming here instead of all you can eat if you prefer quality over quantity--give Joya a shot!
