I’ve been to many smokehouses in Canada and the US and the briskets offered here are the best I’ve ever had. They are so juicy and perfectly prepared its unreal. Let me start my review with food. Food: Briskets: as I said, the best ones I’ve had…ever. So juicy, full of flavour and perfectly cooked. You can tell that patience made these. 10/10….. Fried chicken: I’ll start by saying that I’m not that much of a fried chicken fan. These are reaaallllyyy good. While the batter could use more of a southern kick, the chicken was brined so well that even the next day it was super juicy. 7/10…. Jerk Chicken: Being Caribbean, I can say that I do have some things to say. While I loved it, I think the seasoning had a little too much nutmeg in it. Don’t be afraid to turn up the heat a little bit! 9/10.... Buttermilk Biscuits: I didn’t have high expectations for these to begin with, but they did exceed them! The flavour was reminiscent of Georgia… BUT… they were a little on the dry side. If the restaurant is reading this, try to find a way to make them the steamy hearty goodness that is a southern biscuit. Unfortunately for that reason I give them 6/10 Mac and Cheese: The star of the show. So hearty, so cheesy, so good. I really enjoyed the brisket being in the dish, some other at my table didn’t. I guess to each their own. This mac and cheese is made how it should be. I’ve been to places that “specialize” in making it and didn’t have the flavour, texture and goodness that I had here. 10/10 Corn Bread: The staff had some extra Jalapeno corn bread that ended up not being served, so they gave it to us. I’ll say right now, I don’t like corn bread if it’s not sweet… this wasn’t sweet. I guess its my bias, but don’t let this stop you from trying it. 4/10 because there was a little flavor in it. Service: I forgot the name of the person serving us, but he was awesome. Some people may come in expecting high end service, and I think that’s how the staff is assuming people are coming in expecting as well. This is a smokehouse, when I go to a smokehouse I expect jokes, fun and love of food. Once he knew that we weren’t the type to be stuck up restaurant critics, he dropped the formalities and started joking with us, telling us what he likes and giving us his personal recommendations. The rest of the staff chimed in every so often and added to the over al experience. To the owner: You have chosen great people to run your restaurant. Kudos to you. One complaint I have is where the drink list is. It’s a little awkward to have to stand in between people eating. But that’s because we were sitting on the far side of the restaurant. My overall experience here: 10/10 I came from Brampton to visit this spot and would do it again without a doubt. If you’re looking for good smokehouse food – come here. Don’t go to Toronto.

**A Smoky Delight at Saltlick Smokehouse ** From the moment I stepped into Saltlick Smokehouse, the alluring aroma of smoked meats promised a feast for the senses. This gem on James St in the heart of Hamilton is a haven for barbecue enthusiasts, and our experience was nothing short of spectacular. The star of the show was undoubtedly the **smoked brisket**. Each slice was a masterpiece of flavor, with a perfect bark that gave way to tender, juicy meat that melted in my mouth. The brisket had been smoked to perfection, boasting a beautiful smoke ring that spoke of hours of careful cooking. Next up was the **Nashville fire chicken**, a dish that set my taste buds alight with its well-balanced heat and spices. The chicken was cooked flawlessly, with a crispy exterior and succulent interior that absorbed the fiery marinade, offering a kick that was bold yet not overpowering. But the surprise hit of the meal was the **smoked pork belly nuggets**. These bite-sized morsels were an explosion of flavor, with a smoky crust encasing the rich, fatty goodness of the pork belly. It was a harmonious blend of textures and tastes that left me craving more. The sides were equally impressive, from the creamy slaw that provided a refreshing contrast to the smoky meats. And let's not forget the Brisket Mac n' Cheese – a sweet and cheesy delight that was the perfect accompaniment to the robust flavors of the barbecue. Service at Saltlick was top-notch, with Alexander our friendly staff who was over the top passionate about the offerings. He made instantly made us feel welcome, offered some excellent recommendations, and ensured that our dining experience was memorable. In conclusion, Saltlick Smokehouse is a must-visit for anyone seeking authentic, high-quality barbecue. With its fantastic smoked brisket, fiery Nashville chicken, and irresistible pork belly nuggets, it's a place where every meal feels like a celebration of the finest in Southern barbecue. 🍖🔥

We went with a party of 7 for a birthday and had reservations. 2 people got side orders, and the other 5 ordered the 5 meat and 2 sides. The service started off fine. It was odd that the server took 4 drink orders and then left, but that was no biggie. A big issue was that after ordering we waited for 45 mins to get our food. I would understand this better if the restaurant was packed, however there were only 2 or 3 other tables of two people the entire time, which got their food much quicker. After a long wait we were eager to eat. The portion sizes were decent, for some reason an over abundance of ribs. The jerk chicken was fabulous, perfectly cooked, tasted great, and came out hot. The rest though was room temperature and somewhat bland. We were not impressed after waiting so long and didn't want to send it back simply to wait another 45 mins, or have them microwave meat. For the price that is charged per person I believe the food should come out hot everytime, especially after such a long wait. My only other issue with this meal was that when the bills came, we were only then informed at that point that because there was 7 of us that an 18% tip was automatically placed on our total. I have no problem tipping for service, but when we don't have the option, and this was not mentioned on the menu, or at the location, or by the server beforehand, it tends to seem forced and is distasteful.

Really sub-average experience. Nothing was terrible, but everything was sub-average. We ordered the dishes below (see the pic and receipt). There were only 2 slices of brisket in the meal, and while it was smoked very nicely, almost half the pieces were fat. The chicken drumsticks were good for a fried chicken fix, but honestly I think I could have better fixed the craving at Popeyes. There was a starch overload - maybe a veggie alternative would have been helpful, but those were also the plates I ordered. I will , however, say that the biscuit might have been the best biscuit I've ever had. Now the service - again, not terrible but not quite average. The place wasn't full and I often wondered where the server was or where her priorities were. Also totally thrown off that there are no hood vents. I appreciate the open concept kitchen, but when you are running a smoke-house, there's going to be smoke/smell everywhere and you need to suck it out of the restaurant. I wreaked of smoke after I left and had to throw my clothes right in the wash. To really salt the wound (no pun intended), their minimum recommended tip was 18% and highest was 25% on the post-tax amount. This is no high end NY or Toronto restaurant - and this entitlement really made my indifferent experience become negative. Those folks need to focus on upping their game before expecting gratitude from their customers.

*Apologies for only one photo, but look at that mountain* Salt Lick gives BBQ dining a good name! I often find myself overpaying for BBQ and feeling like I have been robbed of my money for inexpensive cuts of over cooked meat. That’s not the case here. Salt Lick’s meats and sides combo is by far one of the best deals I’ve seen for BBQ. Bringing a six top around Hamilton is tough, but Salt Lick was little to no compromise as they delivered on quantity and quality. However, I do have some thoughts on our experience. We were unable to order ribs as they were sold out. Granted that we arrived at 7 p.m. I can understand that only so many ribs can be cooked in a day. What was unfortunate is how the menu slowly started to shrink as we were preparing our order. We became informed that grits weren’t available and the biggest shock of all … NO MORE SLAW. I had almost gotten up and offered to pick up the nearest head of cabbage and bag of carrots. What saved the experience was not just the food but the service. Our server was great and a good sport with all of the heckling we threw at him on the ever so shrinking menu. He was funny, calm and understanding of our jokes. So long as you are ok with your hair and clothes smelling like smoked brisket, grab a seat at Salt Lick, you won’t be disappointed (unless you love Coleslaw) -Honest F.

Somehow the universe knew a random meat photo on his Instagram would make us come check this place out. We made a reservation for 4 people, sat immediately by a very kind server. The cocktail menu was super fun. We all got the spicy watermelon margaritas and ended up ordering another round during dinner. Sooo yummy and not over done. We ended up just committing to not being able to breathe and be at the Un-do your pants level. Lol We ordered the 4 person, $250 all in. That per couple made the most sense for all the options as we could barely decide what hot to get. We could see the chef working away on our food. Ambience was great, we caught up as friends and waited a normal amount of time for how much we ordered. When everything hit the table it was silence. Lol the flavors were done so well. Brisket mac and cheese, roasted potatoe, smoked beans, and the popcorn grits. For meats we had pulled pork, southern fried chicken, ribs, brisket and sausage. There wasn't anything us 2 ladies complained about or didnt try as we arnt big meat people.... but I finally experienced the meat sweats. Never had them before... but this was worth it. The men enjoyed everything and we took some left overs home. 100% recommend. This team didn't do bbq sauce heavy, not American-ized food chain style either. Realllyy unique and went together so well.
