Read moreTerrible experience - won't return. After reading reviews about this place online, we decided to give it a visit for ourselves. 6 of us piled into two cars and headed down to the Purple Pear on Barton Street... As the reviews would have us believe, the Prime Rib is to die for - so we asked for that, since we couldn't find it on the menu. Unfortunately, the owner advised that they had taken that item off of their menu now, so you were basically left with 3 different steak options, chicken, or seafood.
I made the mistake of opting for a New York steak (Their Rib Eye sounded like it'd be too big to finish). After an unprecedented wait which seemed like 45mins, my steak finally arrived, and I was eager to check it out... When my steak knife was unable to cut it, I asked to borrow another knife from someone else at the table. This was no better, and there was no chance I was going to be able to chew through this bad cut of meat so I planned to wave-down the waiter or owner to come and replace it. After waiting another 10mins without seeing anyone, I finally found my way back to their kitchen area so I could speak with someone about the concern. The owner apologized, suggesting that they'd get a replacement steak out as soon as possible. 20mins later, he passed by our table - and stopped to say that the replacement steak should be out soon, and to advise that the steak they delivered the 1st time was "the tissue end" of the cut so that's why it couldn't be cut with a knife.
Regardless, my much anticipated replacement steak finally arrived, and I eagerly attempted to cut into it. No luck - this replacement was just as bad as the 1st offering. The only difference was that they attempted to pass off two much thinner steaks on top of each other as a single steak. Unfortunately for me, each of these two steaks were tougher than leather. Not wanting to feel like I was complaining without cause, I offered two other people at the table a sample of this new steak, and each of them needed to spit it into their napkins since it could not be chewed.
We've been to Shakespeares, Lord Byrons, Lord Nelson's Steak Houses and have had great experiences at each. This new option was a terrible idea - and instead resulted in a stop at Wendy's on our way home.
It was the a result of the many positive online reviews that encouraged us to visit this location, and it was this same reason that prompted me to write this follow-up review this morning...
Please Read: They DO NOT offer Prime Rib any longer. Their remaining options (and poor service) leave much to be desired, and I hope to stop anyone else from wasting an evening out with family...
Read moreQuite honestly I had i hopes for this place, going in with an open mind and a love for pasta. Staff are friendly and overall service was great other than the very dated system they still use (we had to go up to the bar to pay for our food) service was quick but overall I felt the food and general space is also quite dated and has a mid-upscale 80s style restaurant. The dishes we had seemed very homestyle family recipe like. The sauces were bland (I had a rose) and felt like it came from a can from the grocery store. The baked Camembert appetizer we had chose (although better than the pasta) left me wanting something more from it, pairing it with bread didn’t leave me satisfied enough. I found a hair in my spinach and ricotta rotollo but didn’t say anything although after seeing the bill I wish I had. Almost knocked back and astonished at the price for the entire experience. I understand prices change with time and inflation but I would at least hope the menu would to. Still I see why it’s a family loved place as the costumer base was mostly elderly and you could tell that they had been coming since the beginning. In closing if your looking for the best bang for your buck I suggest trying Caro over on Main Street. Similar price, modern, sheek dining area. you really can tell how much better the quality of food is and how much time and hard work they spend on every detail. The plating is next level, the food itself has deep complex flavours that compliment each plate individually and the variety is...
