More than just food quality, they served DISCRIMINATION I went to lunch today with my team around 12:30 pm, where four of us joined—two Canadians, one Indian (myself), and one Sri Lankan (both of us being South Asians). The server first came to our table and served us four glasses of water—two with ice for the Canadian colleagues and two without ice for us South Asians—without asking for our preference. We ignored this at first. While taking our order, he directed his attention toward my Canadian coworker who ordered butter chicken. He emphasized, “You know this is not Indian, right?” She acknowledged that she knew, yet he hesitated to write it down, continuing to press on the history of butter chicken while looking at her in surprise. My another Canadian teammate decided to share a meal with my South Asian teammate and mentioned this while ordering. When the food arrived, the server gave cutlery—a knife and fork set—to both Canadian teammates, but only a spoon to us South Asians, despite my Canadian teammate and South Asian teammate sharing the same dish. Additionally, I found a hair in my drink, which was a mocktail. The server had not been wearing a cap for his hair and beard, nor gloves while preparing it. At the end of the meal, he asked for feedback. When I shared my concerns regarding discriminatory behaviour, he responded, “Oh, I thought you had been here before,” referring to a visit I had made nearly a year ago. However, I had never been served by him before. I’ve been to Maurya’s before but never had this kind of experience. I probably never will again—because I won’t be going back. Perhaps my other coworkers won’t either especially knowing this experience.

We went to Mauryas for lunch and the food was average at best. For drinks we ordered a sparkling citrus bliss and it was great! Super refreshing in the heat and the scent of cardamom was heavenly! We got the smashed samosa chat and it was too dry and lacking flavour. We asked for extra chutney and salt pepper on the side which sort of fixed the taste a bit. We also got malai kofta and clay oven wheat roti. The malai kofta was too bland and the koftas simply tasted like boiled potato balls without seasonings and I couldn’t taste the paneer in the kofta. The gravy was okay but not as flavourful. The wheat roti was soaked with butter when we got it and nowhere in the menu did it say that the roti would be buttered so that was a bit of miscommunication. Our server was quite nice though, he explained the ethos behind the culinary expirience that they strive to offer and was open to suggestions and feedback. The place looked great and clean. There were many amazing Indian origin paintings on the walls.

Rarely am I so impressed!

This restaurant offers all of the qualities which I expect to receive and rarely do in today’s climate. Above excellent service, responsiveness and attentiveness. Delicious, creative and dishes custom tailored to our requests. Beautifully prepared food, to the authenticity of the family cooking it (India is vast with literally every town having its own unique flavours, but alas most places simply copy the standard expected in the west!) So tasting a restaurant which is striking out into new territory and also providing exquisite cuisine is such a treat!

When asked to give a 1-10 rating of the multiple meals I have enjoyed here, I can immediately give a 12! Anushka, her mother and father, and all the staff are incredibly professional, in touch with their customers needs and respectful. The creative nature of the food means you will taste things here that you may not find anywhere else on the planet!

A final note, as a frequent diner in many many places, that openness that feedback is received and requested is a very rare treat. Often offering advice on improving a meal is met with cold distain, but at Maurya’s every customers thoughts are listened to and thankfully received. I am deeply appreciative to know that this kind of space is offered to the Kamloops area and this is the same service I want to give all the customers of my own business! I hope to visit here every time...
