Came for supper in a party of 4. The staff were friendly on arrival, and the atmosphere was pleasant. My mother would say ‘if you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all’. Luckily for you, my work says ‘you can’t get mad if it’s funny’. If you’re in the latter half, read on.
We were shown our table and told that our waitress would be with us shortly. Shortly is very circumstantial, and for Gulfstream it is somewhere from 3-10 minutes, only for her to provide us menus and vanish quicker than speedy Gonzales in a foot race. After another shortly time of about 7 or 8 minutes she came back with water and the drink menu and said she’d get some answers for a price on an appetizer. ‘Shortly’ thereafter, this time a quicker return of 5 minutes we were able to order our food.
I have a ‘thing’ where I let the server or chef pick my meal. Done it for years, around the world. Only once in the past 20 years have I received the most expensive item on the menu, but fear not friends, Gulfstream to the rescue!
After about 25 minutes we received our drinks… along with our food. I received the Halibut and some of you older folk may know the Monty Python quote ‘all I said was, this piece of Halibut was good enough for Jahova’. I don’t know this overcooked halibut would rate at Joeys Fish and Chips, and as a professional chef if this is you’re piece de resistance, there’s a place across the street that’s accepting resumes… it’s A&W good luck. My wife’s beef dip would rate as good if we had gone to our local dive bar, alas a dive bar this was not.
The waitress, seemingly aware of the quality of service (or maybe an avid fan and baiting me for a Stella review to entertain herself) avoided us like a red head to the sun. Upon her inevitable return she seemed completely unprepared for any comments or responses other than ‘it’s great thanks’ and held a blank stare when we told her it wasn’t very good. She told us they were short staffed, but she’d get her manager.
About 8 minutes later (yep, at this point I was entertaining myself by counting minutes. It was more delightful than counting the bites of rubbery halibut) she arrived and told us the same short staffed and being busy (for a regular restaurant it certainly was not busy, but if after seeing the quality of the food, maybe that is as busy as they get). The manager seemed taken back that the halibut was not anything other than exponentially fantastical as they “are known for their halibut”. Well, after this review they maybe. However, the manager took the news of the beef dip like we had dishonored her eldest child, and whisked the half eaten meal away from my wife quicker than an unlocked bike vanishing in downtown Calgary.
She did eventually return, and as a redemption move kindly comped our entire bill, although wanted as little to do with us as possible.
Do yourselves a favour and find another place to eat. If you are staying at the hotel, for real. A&W is literally...
Read moreThe food was awesome. The atmosphere was great. The service was lacklustre, to say the least. We recently dined at this restaurant for the our fourth time in a year. We have always been impressed by the food and service. Tonight was different. We were a table of five adults, all ordering drinks and dinner. The food was good. The service was disappointing. Our server took a crazy amount of time to get our drink orders. She did not engage with us at all. Our drinks came and there was no question if any one needed anything. She just looked at our empty water glasses and walked away. I had to ask another server for more water. Our food came, served by someone else. It was well presented and tasty. My husband finished his burger as our server came to ask how everything was. Very bad timing. My daughter did not get dressing with her salad and we had to ask another server for that. She never asked if we needed more drinks or if we needed anything. She was dismissive. The restaurant was not particularly busy and they were well staffed. We felt ignored and unserved. We are patient people, with many of us working in the service industry. We all felt dismissed and poorly treated. Too bad, as we have normally enjoyed this spot and have often recommended it to many others. I am not convinced we...
Read moreWe went to the Gulfstream restaurant to celebrate my daughter's upcoming wedding. We had a table of eight. Our waitress Kayla was wonderful. She didn't rush us and allowed us to take our time and enjoy the evening. (2.5 hours) When asked about wines she happily gave her opinion and also asked the other servers for their recommendations. We were very happy with the wine choices. My daughter and future son-in-law are ceasar connoisseurs and were very happy with the Gulfstream ceaser. As for the food.....we started with appetizers. The chilli chicken and chips & creamy parmesan garlic dip were incredible. We are definitely going back for more during happy hour. Four of us had the 8oz. Top sirloin. The steaks were cooked as requested. It was tender and the potato rosti was delicious. One of us had the double smoked pork chop and was very satisfied. One had the spicy Moroccan lamb burger which he liked but wished it was a little spicier. Overall, we were all very happy with the food, service, and atmosphere. On a final note, I found the prices very good. We are already planning our next trip to the Gulfstream Restaurant. We would like to thank Kayla, Logan, and Max for making our evening very special. Two thumbs up...
