Xing Yun — Restaurant in Kelowna

After 25 years, my prayers have been answered! We finally have a restaurant in town that serves authentic Chinese food! I was born and raised in Victoria and Vancouver and have enjoyed an abundance of excellent Chinese food there. Since moving to Kelowna 25 years ago, I have visited every ‘Chinese food’ restaurant from Oliver to Kamloops. These restaurants all serve westernized foods (unhealthy and flavorless), not the real thing. I used to have to wait until my next trip to Vancouver or Victoria to enjoy good Chinese food. Thanks to the recent arrival of Xing Yun, this is no longer the case! The other night, I celebrated the Chinese New Year by having dinner at Xing Yun. The decor was charming. The seating was spacious and kid-friendly. The kitchen and washrooms were clean. The staff was hospitable, young, and energetic. They also spoke English well. The managers visited my table to ask if there was anything we needed. I don’t think the management and staff are originally from Canada, but they certainly deliver our expectations of quality and service. The food was truly Chinese (fresh, healthy, and full of unique flavors). The server asked us what level of spice we preferred. Often (I think because I’m Caucasian), the foods don’t end up being hot enough, but these guys didn’t judge and I was pleased that it was truly spicy. I have no idea the name of the seafood stew in the large bowl, but it is the best Chinese dish I have ever tried. There must have been at least 5 different kinds of peppers in there. We ordered way too many dishes, not realizing the servings would be so large. We were able to pack up the leftovers in nice containers and bring it home. The bill was very reasonable considering the portion sizes and quality of ingredients. I gave the largest tip I have ever given at any restaurant because I was so impressed. What a pleasant surprise to find a very authentic Chinese Restaurant in Kelowna, BC!! They have real Dim Sum!! Since After searching on Google! ... we came with anticipation and we were totally blown away with their various dishes!! The dining room is bright and has a youthful ambiance!

I always have a soft spot for Ma Po Tofu ( a Szechuan Spicy Tofu dish ) and I am happy to report that it was super delicious ... too bad it was only two of us and we couldn't order too many other dishes! But I am glad I ordered my fav dish!

The Spicy Wonton is also done just right, not too spicy and the filling still very juicy and the wonton wrappings were super smooth in texture!

I also liked their version of Singapore Style Fried Rice Vermicelli .. not greasy at all and have the distinctive " Wok Hei"!

Overall, this is a great addition to the local Asian food scene, run by very friendly family ... in times like these, its important to support small local business!

Since its just across from the Kelowna Airport ... its super convenient to hop off the plane and order yourself authentic dim sum and enjoy some...

They have a very extensive dim sum selection, as well as noodle, meat and vegetable dishes. Had some assorted dim sum items including their Xiao Long Bao, House Sui Mai (pork), Seafood with Chive Dumpling, Chicken Feet, Mash Yam Tempura, BBQ Pork Chow Mein, and Egg Custard Bun. The buns had a sweet filling and were a nice way to end the meal, and we enjoyed the yam tempura dish. All the dumplings were of decent size and not too salty.

Service was fine, and the food came out in a reasonable time. Price point was roughly $20/pp with taxes and tip. We weren't very impressed with the Shrimp Rice Roll. It was rather flat and small in size, thinly wrapped with minimal shrimp. Also, the photos for the dumplings are deceiving as many feature 5 in a basket, when only 4 are given (there's a note on the menu that the pictures are for reference only). It would be more helpful and accurate to show the actual number of 'items' one would receive, as it helps customers to plan their order number based on the number of people in...
