I'm honestly kind of sad in writing this review.. I have been following Jaide and Joel's Bakery on instagram for as long as they've been open and I have never been able to make it to the bakery until today. I found myself in the neighborhood. So, I decided to pop my head in.
Right from walking in the door I missed any form of warm welcome or greeting from the girl working at the time. Just didn't give me a good vibe and it seemed she really didn't want to be there. It really just made me feel uncomfortable... But because I had such high hopes from all of the drool worthy instagram posts I decided to go all out. I bought a loaf of bread, 6 cupcakes, and a lemon coconut donut cake.
I wanted to eat the donut cake right away as a snack and so I sat down on one of the many outdoor seating spots. Sadly, I was sorely disappointed. Perhaps it was because it was so late in the day, but the donut cake was hard as a rock on the outside. It was so dry and stale. Not sure if it was because of the display cabinet being so open or if it really was just old. I was thankful for the water I asked for to help get the thing down as I didn't want to waste the nearly $4...
Speaking of price, I think it's odd that you don't save anything for buying in "bulk" or in half dozens or dozens of things... 4.25 for a cupcake is pretty steep. But I can justify it because it's local and has gluten-free ingredients. I'm celiac, so paying a premium is pretty normal. That's why I didn't shy away from paying $9 for the loaf, as this is pretty standard for me. But to buy half a dozen and pay the full 4.25x6 just doesn't sit right maybe? I've worked at bakeries and been to others where you always save a little on buying 6 or 12 of something. Perhaps I'm wrong and this isn't normal. But I can't say I'll be encouraged to buy more than one cupcake at a time from here on out.
Giving 3 stars because I have high hopes for the cupcakes and loaf of bread that I have yet to try.
Also, garbage and recycling outside might be nice during the patio season as there was nothing anywhere around the building. I took my garbage with me into the car...
Read moreWe travelled to Kelowna from the coast on Sunday May 4th for a day trip. My sister in law has Celiac disease so finding bakeries like this can be a really special treat for her. We ordered and while we were waiting for our food one of the staff started shouting at a woman who wanted to read us a "bible verse". We were handling the situation, and weren't upset at all, but she got really loud and threw the woman out somewhat unceremoniously. Once the food was ready we noticed my brother in law wasn't eating his, and it was because he had left his carbonated drink in his vehicle and can't eat without it due to his acalasia. As there were no carbonated drinks on their menu, or even a cooler with some to purchase, he went to the car to get it and tried to rejoin us to eat. The same woman started angrily yelling at us again and said the same thing I read in another review - no outside food or drink. And while I understand the concerns, I really do NOT believe that having a beverage in a container is going to cause an airborne allergic reaction in anyone. His wife has Celiac and so we all take safety very seriously. It was basically made to seem like we were willfully endangering peoples lives by him having some pop. I explained it was for a medical condition but she was insistent and angry. My husband responded to her attitude and when she heard him speak she jumped all over him too. At this point we all stood up and left. This woman needs a serious lesson in how to handle humans, kindness, professionalism, customer service, manners, delivery and anything else that would help her learn there are ways to handle situations that don't result in her shouting at her customers from behind the counter. Walking over and calmly explaining their policy would have been much better, instead we were treated like we were criminals. As we left and rounded the corner outside she also stood in the window staring at us with a very strange smile on here face that I can only say must have been very passive aggressive. Very disappointed as we made a point of including this in our day trip and never should have been...
Read moreOne of my favourite places in Kelowna. Wish I discovered this place earlier during my 3 month stay here. Now I'm neither vegan nor celiac, so I do not care about gluten or milk, but their items are delicious and that's what matters to me.
I used to like their cookies very much, the Lemon Raspberry Cookie is delicious but I don't think they make it every day. I also like their Strawberry Rhubarb Squares and Brownies. It's quite large and keeps me going without feeling hungry for quite some time. The Nanaimo Bars were the best, do give them a try if you have a sweet tooth. They have a large variety of donuts as well, but unfortunately I tried them only once, and it did not disappoint. Not trying all of their donuts is the only regret I have.
While going back home, I wanted to take some of their stuff for my family and friends to taste. I had to take their advice on what I can take that will last a 30 hr long flight journey. They were really patient with me at that time. I had placed an order and they got it done and packed them in boxes for me (pictures attached). Their packaging was fine if you were to carry this by your hand. For my flight, I had to shift everything in one box and wrap the items in butter paper. They did last the journey as they had promised.
My family had the brownies with ice cream and they really liked them (rest of the stuff is still in the freezer!). They wanted me to bring more brownies đ.
Thank you very much for...
