This is no longer Mabui
We were passing through Kelowna and needed a place for dinner. We remembered how delicious Mabui was and decided to stop by. When we arrived, we were quite surprised to see "Kaede" on the sign. We were sadly informed that the owner and chef have left and there is different staffing. However, the menu is the same. We decided to stay and give it a try.
We ordered the Raftee, tuna tataki salad, spicy tuna roll and cold soba with tempura. It was a disappointing meal. The raftee was awful - the pork tasted overcooked and the presentation was atrocious and did not look appetizing. The spicy tuna roll was also extremely mediorce and not what I would expect from a sit in restaurant. The sushi roll was falling apart and I have tasted better from food courts and supermarkets. The tuna tataki tasted quite salty. The saving grace was the soba and tempura which was a nice golden color (thus my 2 stars).
I wonder why the name still says Mabui on Google. This should really be updated to avoid confusion and heartache for...
Read moreOrdered the Spicy Tuna Rolls, they tasted good, but there was too much sauce for our liking so we could only feel the texture of the tuna.
The Dynamite Rolls were decent, but when we ordered a second it came out nice and warm which was way better.
My kids love Sockeye Salmon, so we also ordered that, but when they finished, one of them told me that it tasted "mushy"?
Salmon Cheek was alright, usually we're used to it grilled but it came deep fried instead, the skin did taste like chips though. Plus sauce was thicker than imagined.
The Scallop Rolls were also decent, the sauce was sweeter, which we think that they didn't use Kewpie mayo.
Kind of disappointed they didn't have uni, nor toro (fatty tuna) in stock.
Rolls came out a bit smaller than other places, but it still felt like it was all at a good and reasonable price.
The waitress was very tending to our needs, being as there was only one person running around taking orders...
Read moreI came to Mabui with very liw expectations and the chef worked some incredible magic and left me wanting for more. There is no doubt the chef is incredibly talented. Mabui is definitely popular in kelowna. But I am a skeptic. The menu looked very promising and we ordered half a dozen dishes. Toro Endive, Soft Shell Crab Tempura, Puri Puri Ebi Mayo, Raftee, Crunchy Goat Cheese and Buri Daikon. My absolute favorite was Buri Daikon, with the incredible sauce highlighting flavours of ginger and orange is worth a trip all the way from Seattle. I would have loved to have more Toro with the endives but the match of the ingredients is made in heaven. Soft shelled crabs were nice and crunchy. The 24 hrs slowly stewed cubed pork is another must have. The overall presentation of each dish is 5*...you feast with your eyes and than let the flavors explode in your mouth. Highly...
