Barnacle Barney's Fish n Chips — Restaurant in Ladysmith

Being new to the area, we were hopeful that this would be a hit, being that they are the only place in town.

We ordered the one piece cod and chips for around $14.00. The chips tasted like they were yesterday's chips refried today to save money, but this is just what I felt and may not be a reflection of fact.

But the worst was the fish. The piece of cod was small, i mean really small. The batter was soft and wet inside and out and the fish was closer to raw than cooked. So bad was it that my wife spat out her first bite in horror!

If this is the standard of food in this place I would not dare to want to try anything else from this establishment.

A classic diner experience with a twist. There is a kind of westernized Chinese food fusion thing going on at Barnacles Barney's. We got the fish and chips, sweet and sour pork, and chow mein. The fish and chips were great, chow mein was decent, if a bit light on protein, and the sweet and sour pork was okay. I thought it was overcooked and too heavy on the sauce, although that would be a plus with rice.

Service was very friendly and as attentive as could be. One girl was running at least 6-7 tables of 4+ people. Definitely a hustler and sweet as well. We came in around lunch, so I was a bit surprised to see her serving solo.

Was searching out where to go for Chinese food lunch and came upon Barnacle Barney's in Ladysmith. Kind of an odd name for a Chinese food restaurant but they do also do fish and chips and other typical western type cuisine. Reviews looked good, menu looked good. This was definitely the right choice. All of the different foods coming out of the kitchen looked delicious and plentiful. We decided on the dinner for 4 which included, 4 yummy spring rolls, chicken chow mein, chicken fried rice, beef chop suey, sweet&sour lean pork and crispy almond chicken. Everything was hot and very flavourful. Couldn't ask for better service and the final bill very reasonable. Can't wait to go back and try more of the incredible menu. Yum!
