Oh man. Where do I start?
I've been wandering these rainy shores for 20 years….a lost soul, a displaced Maritimer, yearning for the sweet, sweet embrace of a real east coast donair.
I've tried them all – the 'Greek' imposters, the 'spicy' pretenders, the watery sauce that looks like skim milk jokes, the 'we use yogurt' abominations.
My heart was a barren wasteland of donair-related disappointment.
Then, like a beacon of hope in the drizzly abyss, I found Donair Express.
The sauce. Oh, the sauce! It was like a symphony of sweet, thick, garlicky goodness dancing a jig on my tastebuds.
The meat? I was concerned at first. Beef, chicken or falafel? Ugh..donair meat wasn’t an option. I chose beef although I was hoping for the questionable and sometimes mystery “donair meat” that typically leaves my gullet in digestive distress, ruining the lives of everyone around me.
But, holy mackerel, that beef was perfectly seasoned. Like PERFECT. And ZERO distress. Just gullet joy.
The pita? Warm and welcoming, like a hug from a friendly fisherman. I almost cried. (Don't judge me.)
If you're a Maritimer lost in this donair-deprived wilderness, or just a regular person with good taste, go for a rip right now. They're doing the Lord's...
Read moreMy daughter and I tried Donair Express a couple of days and we were both very happy with our food and the service. The lady who took our order (I apologize for the bad spelling but her name was something like 'Wall-ley') was so incredibly kind! She even let us know that she makes all of the sauces herself, homemade from scratch. Even though I wasn't there to order, I was sold when she said the sauces were homemade and I immediately wanted to place an order as well.
I had the butter chicken bowl and it was outstanding! The flavors were rich and delicious and the chicken was seasoned perfectly. The freshly diced onions and tomatoes were the perfect accompaniment to the dish. Not only was the portion generous enough that I had leftovers for lunch the next day, but the amount of chicken in the dish was generous as well.
Don't expect a saucy dish though (that's what I think when I hear butter chicken). It was more fresh and light than heavy and saucy. I was actually glad that it wasn't a heavy sauce dish. Maybe a light drizzle on top would have made it an 11 out of 10 😆 But I do...
Read moreLocated in the heart of Langford, in the shop lot in Goldstream, we went for trying their donair kebabs. Also, we were excited that Langford finally has a donair place! We wanted to have their Butter Chicken Bowl, but they did not have it. We had their Halifax Rice Bowl and Caribbean Rice Bowl. Very dissapointed with the taste. We had Arabian, Syrian and Turkish food in multiple restaurants accross Victoria and Vancouver, and we were not satisfied with the taste that Donair Express in Langford served. The flavour was bland and chicken was not well marinated. Also, to add some flavour or moisture to the food, I ordered fries. Their fries were store bought frozen fries, with too much salt sprinkled on them. I requested separate garlic sauce with the food, and to my surprise, the garlic sauce was very watery or to put it better looked like it was diluted.
I expected better from a place that just opened as the only Donair shop in Langford. Might try one more time in two months time to see if they improve, and will definitely leave the review...
