Sushi Umibe — Restaurant in Maple Ridge

Food is good, service is absolutely horrible. i often go here and we always have horrible experiences but my boyfriends birthday was the last time i’ll ever go here. After having three different servers with attitude and literally just sliding food onto the table not giving it to anyone directly or bringing out meals out at the same time We were respectful as always in every restaurant but this time we left a smaller tip and when we did the lady comes back and says “what’s wrong with today?” while aggressively grabbing our plates and cups i explained that i wasn’t happy with the service and she said “ohh not happy with service hmm” and repeatedly mocked what i said to co workers as she was walking away! i’ve never left a bad review on a restaurant before but this was something else. i usually take into consideration if they are busy or maybe someone is having a hard day but for three servers to have the same attitude and it was two other tables in there - no excuses. There is one male server there and he is amazing! very very kind person - 0/10...

So there we were 7:30 Friday night, really in the mood for Japanese food, (knowing this was late for Maple Ridge) I checked FB looking for some hidden gem, again knowing this was late for our fun city, read good things about Sushi Umibe, decided to give it a try, boy were we glad we did! ☆Chicken teriyaki was amazing- crispy pieces of chicken with the perfect amount of sauce, not over loaded and drowning in it. The 2 rolls we tried were new to us but again did not disappoint: ☆Umibe Roll said it was spicy but it wasn't too much, just the right amount of heat in the spicy mayo ☆Prosciutto Roll- perfect balance of salty and sweet with mango sauce topped with a caper on each piece.

The service was amazing! As soon as we walked in the door, we had a warm welcome from I'm guessing the owner. The young lady serving us was constantly on the ready, always keeping an eye on our tea level, which, by the way, has a nice nutty flavour. The food was fast, fresh, hot and oh so tasty! Good execution, generous portions, nothing too exotic...just plain good! We ordered the "Love Combination", a 2-person sized compilation of standard-fare sushi restaurant staples. It was exactly what we expected, well-executed, tasty and consistent. The food was right in line with the average for sushi restaurants - everything you'd expect but nothing unique. One standout dish was the chicken teriyaki, which came on a sizzling hot plate (now a rarity among sushi shops). The whole experience was up to par, and we would go back for that reason.

On another note, servers were very friendly and provided us with a high chair for the little ones. There was a kids combo on the menu, but we have not tried it yet. One thing that is GREAT for families is that the parking spaces are extra-wide, leaving plenty of space to get little ones in and out of car seats! Bring your change-pad... There are NO CHANGE TABLES HERE, but the washroom is plenty large to perform a diaper change...
