Came back 3 years later to see if they improved
Service is still .... Not the greatest. The server definitely was either not in a good mood or didn't have her morning coffee yet.
Breakfast noodles were ok. Hotpot rice actually had burnt crispy bottom which is surprisingly good. Milk teas and coffees still bland
Overall the value is there since the prices never went up. But don't expect good service.
2.5/5 Star Review - Food needs improvement
HK Cafe | Mon-Sun 7am-7pm | Dine In | Take Out
Newly opened Hong Kong style cafe opened near Mount Joy station. Previously Pizza Deli. But owners don't sound like Hong Kong Chinese.
Simple design, cute customized canvas to display their logo. Seats 38 people.
Did not check my vaccination passport but I did see some hand sanitizers and temperature checker lying around. They were busy with take out orders though.
Currently no food delivery apps, only order by phone.
They offer a simple menu of: Breakfast from 7am to 11am No High-Tea menu for the moment 車仔麵 cart noodles starting from $10.99 (no drinks) 煲仔飯 Rice in clay pot served with soup starting at $11.99 焗飯/焗意粉 Baked rice/spaghetti starting at $11.99 with soup/coffee/tea 菠蘿咖哩 starting at $10.99 with soup/coffee/tea
Service: I wanted to order the cart noodles which a copy of a paper selection was given to me but no pen or pencil. So I used my own.
The server was nice but never checked back with us.
Food came quite slow for only 2 dine in tables. My first dish came after 30 mins .... I ordered at 1:59, my noodle came at 2:30.
Food: My tea was very water down, needs more 茶膽.
The bowl of 羅宋湯 soup had a lot of potatoes but it could use more tomato. Even the colour could use some red.
三拼車仔麵: 蘿蔔牛腩,鹵水大腸,紅腸,瀨粉 Soup base was good. Display was nice. Noodles were not fully cooked. It's too al danté/ hard. Couldn't even eat it. Beef brisket was ok soft. Intestine was ok.
黑椒雞扒飯: It was under the baked section but just like the name, it's not baked. Meat and chicken was very salty. Over seasoned. Texture of the chicken was okay though.
鴛鴦 Coffee/Milk tea: Too milky, don't taste tea or coffee. The cup of milk tea is smaller than the usual HK Cafe in the area. It is legit Hong Kong sized cup.
Conclusion: I would give them a few months to improve with the experience I just had. Although I didn't walk in with high hopes, I'm disappointed.
At this moment I don't think it should be called a 冰室, doesn't give me that vibe (茶餐廳 cafe feel). It's okay and convenient but there is room for improvement or an expanded...
Read moreI was super excited to try this place. It has a very cozy feel that you get at a mom & pop restaurant. The menu has classic Hong Kong breakfast food. I couldn’t wait to come here, until I actually tried the food…. I ordered the cart noodles. As I was eating I realized there was a piece of plastic in my mouth! I assume it was from the noodle package. This completely turned me off from the entire restaurant. So gross. My food was steaming hot so the plastic definitely leached in the food. They obviously don’t think it’s a big deal to have plastic leaching in the food since they serve you steaming hot tea in a plastic cup. Worst part about all this is when I told them about what I found in my food they didn’t really care. When the bill came they said they took off 15%. I didn’t even eat much of the meal and I’m still being charged?! ridiculous. $12 just to have a few sips of soup, some spam and plastic. I paid and left. I’ll never be coming back here and I’m sure they’ll have some kind of health violation that will shut them down. Beyond disappointing. If they weren’t so cheap and just refunded my meal, I wouldn’t be writing this review. I’m giving them two stars because it could be a one-off, but I...
Read moreI came in at 5:30 PM, since I have a big family dinner at 8:30 PM, I wanted to come in this Mount Joy Station Cafe for a light afternoon tea special as I don't want to eat too full a few hours prior to my big family meal. Unfortunately, their afternoon tea special ends at 5:00 PM. Thus, I was in a very "sensitive and awkward" time zone coz their menu doesn't offer all-day light snack. They served breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea special and dinner.
Those dinner options were top heavy, so I spoke with the server, she said she will give me an exception to order a ham & egg soup macaroni but will not include a hot beverage since the afternoon tea deal already ends. I was ok with it and appreciate their flexibility.
She asked how I like my egg, sunny side up or over easy, that was a nice touch especially from a HK Chan Chan Tang, that's unique to me.
The portion is pretty good, the fried egg was nice and the toast was tasty as well. I would come back.
I do, however, suggest they have an all-day food menu so that they can offer some lighter options for people like me to want to eat something to munch on but not necessary need a giant oven baked pork chop rice or satay...
