Summary: Food was 3/5, service and staff not so much. Argue and bully you into tipping an amount they deem acceptable despite being uncaring and nonexistent through our time there.
Full review: I try to avoid reviews under 3 stars, I try to avoid reviews in general, but unfortunately this is a definitive 1 star. The food was ok and well presented, props to the chefs for the most part, wraps for the duck were pretty dry however.. If you're going for food, 3 stars. Unfortunately food isn't the face of the business when service staff are the first thing you see. The staff seems uncaring and would rather they, nor you, be there at all. Besides bringing your food they provide no extra service, no nice pleasentries and not even a smile. Having worked in restaurants I understand, its not always great.
Upon paying we decided not to tip because of being ignored and the overall demeanor of the staff, this caused quite a problem because the staff said we must tip and it is illegal not to.... They then tried to shame and bully us into tipping, even bringing up their experience in western restaurants as well, this is simply inappropriate.
We offer to tip still to be a bit good hearted about the whole thing, maybe they're having a rough day, restaurants are stressful however the amount we offered was not acceptable to them. You do not bully someone into tipping especially when there was nothing notable about the service besides taking our order paper, which we had to fill out ourselves which is fairly normal, and bringing us our order. This does not constitute a tip and arguing with us about it is certainly not an ideal way to get one or a returning customer.
Will definitely not be returning do to this experience. If the tips are so necessary on top of the already expensive bill maybe raise the price on the...
Read morePeking duck dish was delicious with the duck cooked just right, skin crispy and with just the right amount of saltiness. The serving size of the duck looks like half a duck, however when I asked the waitress beforehand she claims that the dish is the "whole" duck. The Peking duck dish arrived very fast. The other dishes arrived slightly later. The one dish I ordered, dry noodles in soy sauce (炸酱面), arrived 30 minutes after ordering.
What I am extremely unsatisfied about is the waitress who was extremely rude to me when I returned to the restaurant to retrieve a backpack that I left there by accident. The waitress (not the one who brought me my bag, that one was nice and all smiles) stopped me at the receptionist desk and demanded I tip higher. She was asking pressing questions like: Why did you tip so low? Our tipping standards is at least 10%. Do you have a problem with our service? etc. Me being a broke 20 year old did not know how to react. Instead of acting like a mature adult, the waitress rudely demanded more tips from me, and even audibly scoffed behind my back as I was exiting the restaurant. Extremely rude and unprofessional.
All in all, food is quite good. However, like a few reviews mentioned the price is a bit on the high end. The signature Beijing Peking duck dish meets my expectations. Would recommend for people who are looking to eat out for the special occasion. Just be wary of a certain...
Read moreI have to say this restaurant is poorly run. The main dining area was frigid cold where all patrons had to wear their jackets indoors to stay warm while eating dinner. The last time I encountered this experience was when I was in China and the ambient temperature was similar to that here. There was a constant draft and our table was at the other extreme of the entry (I truly feel sorry for those sitting beside the doorway) The food was meh. Got the duck and fish soup which 1) lacked any appeal of being presented with the duck and the slicing. 2) the flavors were muddled in both the duck and soup. Sometimes a little goes a long way and too much ruins the pure taste.
PSA - If you have elders or young children, I would definitely avoid this as it is a health hazard to them. The food is also meh and fortunately for us in the 6ix, we have many other options to select from.
Need to find out if there are any health regulations for York Region that requires a minimum dining room temperature for guests as this was getting to the point of eating outdoors with a camp fire during an arctic vortex would have been much more comfortable. Even the workers were wearing down jackets to...
