West Street Cuisine — Restaurant in Markham

Uninspiring and salty.

We came to eat here on the recommendation of a family friend. She used to eat when they were a standard food stall. We ate there before and it was pretty good congee. They closed the food stall and moved into this restaurant location.

We decided to try out the restaurant location. The restaurant is spacious and comfortable. The metal chairs are a bit tight. If you have a larger body type, I would recommend seating along the benches.

The staff is friendly and helped explain things on the menu. We ordered the pork and preserved egg congee, our standard order. We also tried their deep fried squid and pork ribs with black bean sauce steamed rice which were new items on the menu.

We found that the congee was saltier than before. The fried squid was also too salty as well. The steamed rice was ok. But the pork ribs was also too salty.

If you like your salt, it’s fine. But we found everything too salty. The food was definitely not the same as before. The restaurant is nice and the food is passable but there’s plenty of other options...

Place was dead on a Thursday evening. The liver in the "thick pork liver porridge" was really thick! The liver wasn't unfresh but it just wasn't buttery and full of taste. Congee was tasteless, seems they don't use any salt or MSG and was cooked in plain water instead of chicken/pork stock. Price is cheap. Rice roll + congee combo for $10.99. Rice roll wasn't smooth at all. This is not a high quality, high volume restaurant and with the quality level of Chinese restaurants in the area, I won't come...

Worst service. Owner cheat on customers by using green onions to substitute for yellow chives in the rice rolls, not telling customers they don't have chives in the beginning, hoping customers will not find out. When asked about it they said no one ever complained about it. They were not willing to make adjustment to the bill due to a cheaper ingredient being used, but kept bull sxxtting about how they gave soya sauce for free, as if they are doing differently than other places.
